The nests were found in the sand in Seal Beach and Huntington Beach, hundreds of miles north of the nearest known nesting beaches. The eggs were relocated to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach because of possible beach hazards related to Hurricane Polo over the next few days. Researchers said they are studying possible correlations that might have led the olive ridley sea turtle to Orange County shores, including El Nino, prey, currents and a rare navigation mistake.

More than 200 eggs from the first documented natural sea turtle nests on the U.S. West Coast were moved Friday from two Orange County beaches to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach due to concerns over Hurricane Polo.

The storm churning off Mexico’s coast was not expected to directly impact Southern California, but will likely contribute to powerful surf and beach hazards. The two olive ridley sea turtle nests in the sand in Seal Beach and Huntington Beach were moved to the aquarium due to hazardous conditions, authorities said Friday morning.

“Due to hazardous surf conditions expected to coincide with this weekend’s high tides, there is an elevated concern that the nests will be washed away,” the Aquarium said in a news release. “Collectively, we made the challenging decision to carefully move the olive ridley sea turtle eggs from the wild to the Aquarium of the Pacific.”

Biologists carefully removed the eggs one-by-one from the nests around 6 a.m. Friday and placed them in containers that were transported in a van to the Aquarium, where they will incubated in a temperature-controlled environment. If viable, they are likely to hatch in 45 to 60 days, the Aquarium said, adding that updates will be provided during incubation.

The eggs caused a stir earlier this month when video showed the first-ever natural nesting on record of a sea turtle on the West Coast. The olive ridley sea turtle was seen in video recorded by the Huntington Beach Fire Department on Sept. 16 digging a nest and laying eggs near Seal Beach, NOAA Fisheries West Coast said in a social media post.

Three days later, a sea turtle was seen on a beach a few miles south. The agency said it is not clear whether it was the same turtle seen in Seal Beach.

Both areas were fenced off and beach visitors were asked to stay away from the area. Sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Why all the egg-citement?

Jeff Seminoff, the NOAA Marine Turtle Ecology and Assessment Program Lead, said Friday that the discovery of the nests marked a landmark moment in his decades-long career.

“In all this time, I think this is one of my career highlights,” Seminoff said. “To have animals nest in our own backyard is just an incredible thing.”

The olive ridley is the smallest sea turtle species. They usually grow to weight 100 pounds and are about 2.5 to 3 feet long. A typical lifespan is 30 to 50 years.

They are found around the world, but usually in the tropical waters of he Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. Nesting areas can be found in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. The olive ridley’s clutch size can range anywhere from 70 to 140 eggs in a nesting period.

“While occasionally seen in Southern California following warm currents, this species has never been documented to nest in the United States,” according to NOAA.

Seminoff said there is a long list of possible reasons why the sea turtle ended up nesting where and when it did.

“We’ll never know for sure, but what we’re looking at are correlations with these events,” Seminoff said. “One of the obvious things is El Nino. We’re already experiencing warm waters, so that’s a driver. Not just the fact that it’s warm waters, but that these are warm waters that have been sustained for some time. We’re just coming out of summertime, so waters were generally warm to begin with.

“Other things like currents and prey bases, those are all important factors that might have gotten those turtles to inhabit the coast here.”

The turtle’s Southern California visit also might be a rare case of an expert navigator missing the mark.

“All sea turtles are ancient mariners,” Seminoff said. “When a turtle hatches as a small baby turtle, it goes out to the ocean for 16 years or more, and it usually goes back to the same beach where it hatched. In this case, that’s probably unlikely. In addition to El Nine, different currents, different prey bases, there might be some sort of a navigational blunder. For some reason, they probably thought the were probably farther south.”

The closest known nesting beach is about 700 miles south.

“The last part of that is the probability has just increased,” Seminoff said. “There are more turtles out there today. Things like the U.S. Endangered Species Act, which is so important for habitat protection, reducing by-catch, those are important things that led to ridley recovery.”

The turtle gets its name from the olive green color of its shell, which is shaped like a heart. The species has two nesting strategies — solitary or arribada, which refers to synchronized mass nesting of thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of olive ridley turtles.

At one point, an estimated 10 million members of the species were in the Pacific Ocean. Now, there are a handful of beaches that are home to mass nestings. The species’ most significant threats include bycatch in fishing gear and the harvesting of turtles and eggs.

As for what they eat, the olive ridley is not picky. “They are, by far, the most opportunistic and flexible sea turtles,” Seminoff said. “They are extremely opportunistic in term of what they eat. They will eat just about anything they can.”

Their varied appetite is among the reasons the olive ridley can be found in a variety of locations.

Some advice from NOAA if you notice a nest in the wild:

Keep your distance. Give nesting sites plenty of space, and don’t disturb the fencing or signage.

Spot a sea turtle? The public can play an important role in protecting turtles and helping our experts by reporting sightings.

Found a stranded sea turtle? Call the NOAA Fisheries West Coast Stranding Hotline at (562) 506-4315.

About Hurricane Polo

Polo has changed between Category 4 and 5 strength and was expected to skirt Mexico’s coast over the next few days. Rain and strong winds had already started to pummel the coast with waves crashing onto the normally pristine beaches.

On Friday morning, Polo was about 400 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and moving west at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph.

Polo is not expected to reach Southern California, but areas of greatest concern for coastal flooding include the Peninsula and Belmont Shore in Long Beach, Avalon and Malibu. Coastal flood advisories could be issued early next week.

Southern California will see the main impacts from Polo Sunday through Tuesday with high surf and dangerous rip currents. Morning high tides could reach 7 feet.

More coastal erosion and flooding are possible in Southern California.

What to KnowMore than 200 eggs were found on Orange County beaches in the first documented natural sea…

[33
713,588,131,133,132,29597,7662
post-475815","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-long-beach","tag-animals-and-wildlife","tag-huntington-beach","tag-long-beach","tag-long-beach-headlines","tag-long-beach-news","tag-seal-beach","tag-wildlife
["GET
