LONG BEACH, Calif. \u2014<\/p>\nMore than 200 sea turtle eggs moved from Orange County beaches to protect them from Hurricane Polo surf<\/p>\n
LONG BEACH, Calif. \u2014<\/p>\n
Wildlife officials moved more than 200 olive ridley sea turtle eggs from beach nests in Orange County to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach on Friday morning, citing concerns that dangerous surf conditions from Hurricane Polo could wash them away. <\/p>\n
The eggs are from the first olive ridley sea turtles in history to nest on the West Coast, 700 miles north of their normal nesting spot. <\/p>\n
Officials said 104 eggs were recovered from Seal Beach and 100 more from a second turtle’s nest on Huntington Beach. <\/p>\n
“There are more turtles out there today,” NOAA Marine Turtle Ecology and Assessment Program Lead Jeff Seminoff said. “Things like the U.S. Endangered Species Act, which is so important for habitat protection, for reducing by-catch, those are really, really important things that have led, particularly with olive ridley turtles, to incredible recoveries over the last 20 years.”<\/p>\n
The eggs are being incubated in a temperature-controlled environment. <\/p>\n
If viable, they could hatch in 45 to 60 days, after which they will be released back into the ocean.<\/p>\n
