The full-length video, which was played at the Thursday event, was tongue-in-cheek, depicting Bredefeld as less like the Ethan Hunt character played by Tom Cruise and more like Michael Scott, the bumbling boss that Steve Carell plays in “The Office.” Carell’s character is a buffoon whose bravado and undeserved confidence is often overshadowed by his failures.

The county video echoed just about any episode of “The Office” with county employees — Sheriff John Zanoni, Communications Director Sonja Dosti, board clerk Bernice Seidel and others — either rolling their eyes or cringing at Bredefeld pitching the ideas to jump from a helicopter or pop out of a turret with a SWAT-issued rifle.

“I hope you enjoyed the video that opened the program and highlights just some of the tremendous work of our Sheriff’s Office and firefighters throughout Fresno County, and that they are truly covering 6,000 square miles,” Bredefeld said after the video introduced him. “Whether it’s waterways, or it’s the mountains, or it’s doing patrol, or it’s dive team, they do everything.”

He said before the event he wanted the video to draw attention and be funny.

The speech that went along with the theme Building a Stronger, Safer Fresno County touted law enforcement in the county, including the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office as well as Fresno County firefighters and teams that rescue animals during emergencies and prosecutors.

A video package that played at the event also praised the first fentanyl homicide conviction in Fresno County of a 24-year-old woman who sold fentanyl to a 41-year-old woman who died after using it. The case was described as groundbreaking by Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp.

Bredefeld also pushed county efforts this year around copper theft, dog breeders and an ordinance around halfway houses that include sex offenders. The latter case has drawn a lawsuit in Fresno County.

Other video packages highlighted Naomi Tobias, the CEO of the Central California Animal Disaster Team; Andre Benson, a Fresno police officer; Haifaa Abdulhaq, the director of cellular therapy at Community Health System; and Mona Ahmed, the executive director of Fresno Furry Friends.

Chamber President Scott Miller said the event was sold out and had particularly high interest this year, pointing to the video that went viral and drew criticism.

“Supervisor Bredefeld is never boring and, in fact, I’m pretty sure there’s never been so much attention on the chamber event in 140 years,” he said.

Fresno County Board Chair Garry Bredefeld points what appears to be a semi-automatic firearm in a promotion video for the State of the County event hosted with the Fresno Chamber of Commerce.
