Hazardous conditions continued along San Diego beaches this weekend, with waves forecasted up to 7 feet and increased rip currents creating safety concerns for surfers and swimmers.<\/p>\n
As of Sunday, the National Weather Service reported Hurricane Odalys (a category 1) and Hurricane Polo ( a category 3) will influence coastal conditions through this upcoming week.<\/p>\n
At Tourmaline Beach, the conditions were also attracting surfers before sunrise, with the parking lot packed as they headed into the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n
Surfer Mayo Mendoza was hopeful. \u201cOnce you catch that right wave, it lasts the whole season. It just feels good,” he said. <\/p>\n
Hannah Ford, who lives nearby, has documented unusual weather conditions on her cellphone, this year.<\/p>\n
She said, \u201cI definitely feel like the weather is changing. It\u2019s so much more tropical. I feel like I\u2019m in Hawaii. It’s more humid.\u201d<\/p>\n
Warmer ocean water can trigger the El Ni\u00f1o pattern, bringing a wetter winter, more storms and coastal erosion.<\/p>\n
The coastline is already dealing with the effects of erosion in Encinitas, where a bluff collapsed at Grandview Beach about a week ago. <\/p>\n
Access stairs at the beach remain temporarily closed.<\/p>\n
Doug Barkett, who lives in Encinitas, said the closure affects surfers who use the beach.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that closing the access to the surfers really inhibits our ability to do what we enjoy doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Engineers inspected the crumbled section of the coast and determined there could be additional bluff failure. The access will remain closed until further notice.<\/p>\n
Back at Tourmaline Beach, Mendoza prepared to paddle out. \u201cI\u2019m looking for that one (wave). I probably won\u2019t find it. That\u2019s my luck, but we’ll see.” <\/p>\n
