Barriers were placed at nearly two dozen intersections in Compton, including at Center and Alondra.<\/p>\n<p>Past takeovers left tire marks on pavement at the location, one of several street takeover hot spots identified by the Los Angeles County Sheriff&#8217;s Department.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It basically prevents it because you don&#8217;t really want to roll your car over this bump at such a high speed and cause damage to you vehicle,&#8221; said Compton Street Maintenance Supervisor James Sanders. &#8220;We basically use it as a deterrent measure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The installations began last year. The city is looking to install barriers at about 23 more intersections this year.<\/p>\n<p>The medians are designed to reduce open space and prevent drivers from performing stunts like donuts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The geometry won&#8217;t allow the free spinning at the intersections,&#8221; said Jack Gong, city engineer with the public works department. &#8220;So far, we received very positive feedback from residents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Resident Clarence Stubberfield said he&#8217;s noticed changes since the medians were installed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I noticed that there has been a slow down on that,&#8221; Stubberfield said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Compton is trying a new tactic to address a long-time problem.
