Sept 29 (Reuters) – Hurricane Polo made landfall in the southern half of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula \u200cin the early hours of Tuesday with gusts of \u200cup to 200 km\/h (125 mph).<\/p>\n
Authorities expected life-threatening hurricane conditions to continue across \u200bBaja California Sur for several hours, while weather conditions were expected to deteriorate in the south of the mainland state of Sonora.<\/p>\n
Polo hit land as a category 2 hurricane south of Las \u200cBarrancas, halfway down \u2060the state’s west coast, a zone far less populated than the Los Cabos resort corridor at \u2060the southern tip of the peninsula.<\/p>\n
Mexico’s National Weather Service said it had brought sustained winds of 150 to 170 km\/h with \u200bgusts of \u200b180 to 200 km\/h and \u200bwaves 7 to 9 meters \u200chigh.<\/p>\n
The storm was expected to dump 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) of rain across Baja California Sur, with a risk of life-threatening flooding and mudslides, according to the US National Hurricane Center.<\/p>\n
Polo is still expected to be a \u200churricane at its second landfall in \u200bmainland Mexico, after crossing the Gulf \u200bof California.<\/p>\n
Both Mexican authorities \u200band the NHC urged residents to remain safe \u200cindoors through the morning, either at \u200btheir homes \u200bor in temporary shelters opened up in high-risk areas.<\/p>\n
Residents of the towns in Polo’s path packed supermarkets over the \u200bweekend to buy \u200cessential products while business owners boarded up doors and windows \u200bin anticipation of the storm.<\/p>\n
