— George Orwell, 1984

Nearly eight decades after Orwell wrote those words, they continue to resonate. The Fresno City College Theatre Department brings that story to the stage with a live radio drama adaptation of “1984,” running Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 and 10, at 7 p.m. in the Studio Theatre.

Performed in the tradition of golden-age radio theatre, the production unfolds through live voice work and foley sound effects rather than traditional sets and staging, an experience modern audiences might compare to watching a podcast recorded live.

Director Karina Balfour shared: “George Orwell imagined a world where truth and history could be rewritten at a whim, where we’re told to reject the evidence of our eyes and ears in favor of spoon-fed propaganda. The parallels between this story and the world we currently live in are too strong to ignore.”

Fourteen student actors will voice the roles, with two student foley artists creating all sound effects live during each performance. The production invites audiences to reflect on the connections between the 1940s and today, encouraging audiences to reflect on the past, present, and future.

Run time is approximately 65 minutes. Admission is a suggested $10 donation. Tickets are available at the door only, no advance sales. Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended.
