College students stood shoulder-to-shoulder with working professionals and neighborhood elders—a cross-section of ages, backgrounds and nationalities, all bound by a single look of anticipation. They gathered for a one-night-only celebration of a living legend: Stevie Wonder.

Hosted by the USC Thornton School of Music, Songs in the Key of Life at 50: Reimagined honored Wonder’s 1976 album. Co-curated by Thornton Dean Jason King and iconic keyboardist and music director Greg Phillinganes, the event promised a look at an album that redefined American popular music.

When the doors opened, the crowd flooded into the hall, filling the seats in minutes. Warm, jazzy tunes spilled from the house speakers, blending with the steady hum of excited chatter filling the auditorium.

<img decoding="async" data-chromatic="ignore" alt="Audience members take their seats ahead of the performance. Guided by family, friends and security, he took a seat in a reserved section on the far right, just a few rows from the stage. Dean Jason King opened the night with an introduction framing Wonder’s transformative cultural legacy. Describing Wonder’s vision as “ahead of its time,” King traced the album’s profound social and musical resonance from 1976 straight to the present day.

Then came the spark that lit the room. Phillinganes—a longtime member of Wonder’s famous Wonderlove band—took the stage alongside an ensemble of Thornton students, faculty and alumni. Sheet music set and instruments ready, Phillinganes tapped his foot to set the tempo.

“1, 2… 1, 2, 3!”

The band exploded into the fiery, complex fusion of “Contusion,” launching a masterclass in soul, rhythm, and vocal athleticism. Grammy Award-winning organist and pianist Cory Henry brought a spiritual gravity to the stage, playing the Harpejji—a modern stringed instrument favored by Wonder—for a transcendent performance of “Have a Talk with God” that had the crowd swaying in unison.

Cory Henry (left), Avery Wilson (middle), Jeffery Lewis (right) (Photos © USC 2026; Courtesy of USC Thornton School of Music / Photo credit by Brian Feinzimer @bri.fei)

Singer Jeffery Lewis charmed the audience with a soulful rendering of “Knocks Me Off My Feet” before pivoting to a vibrant, soaring take on “Isn’t She Lovely.” Out in the crowd, concertgoers sang, danced, and revelled in the moment alongside total strangers.

Singer Lavance Colley commanded the room with striking vocal control on “Ngiculela – Es Una Historia – I Am Singing” and “Another Star,” while Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Avery Wilson brought down the house by unleashing explosive vocal runs on “Summer Soft” and “I Wish.” Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and producer Tone Stith delivered a smooth, romantic rendition of “As,” layering the auditorium in rich, velvety harmonies. Thornton student vocalists sang alongside industry veterans, tackling complex arrangements for tracks like “Village Ghetto Land” and “Pastime Paradise.”

Throughout the set, all attention drifted toward the front rows. There sat Wonder—smiling, immersed in the music, and lost in his signature rhythmic head-shake as generations poured their hearts into his catalog.

<img decoding="async" data-chromatic="ignore" alt="Members of the ensemble, including USC Thornton student musicians and singers, perform on stage. In one clip, The Roots band member Questlove recalled his very first homework assignment in first grade. His teacher had instructed the class to go home and listen to the Songs in the Key of Life album. In another, Motown founder Berry Gordy recounted negotiating Wonder’s historic 1975 $13 million contract with Motown Records.

Beneath the high-energy music and soaring performances lay a timeless message—one Wonder urged the audience to carry forward by reimagining how we love and honor each other. When asked what the audience should take away from the evening, Dean King echoed that sentiment. “I hope people heard how urgently these songs still speak to the present,” King said. “This album is a reminder that we have a profound sense of our responsibility to one another.”

<img decoding="async" data-chromatic="ignore" alt="Stevie Wonder (left), Greg Phillinganes (middle), Dean Jason King (right). Standing alongside Phillinganes, he thanked his longtime collaborator, the performers and Dean King for bringing the evening to life. To close out the night, Wonder led a performance of “Love’s in Need of Love Today.” Before the music began, he left the room with a simple, resonant message: “Make love great again… open your heart and see that we are all one.”

Edited by Robert Hill and JohVonne Roberts

[27
46130,48,52,51,47,50,49,330,60527
post-479819","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-los-angeles","tag-black-culture","tag-la","tag-la-headlines","tag-la-news","tag-los-angeles","tag-los-angeles-headlines","tag-los-angeles-news","tag-music","tag-stevie-wonder
["GET
