Amid growing fears about the power of artificial intelligence and surrounded by protesters, OpenAI held its annual developer conference on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The maker of ChatGPT also introduced new products during the event.<\/p>\n
Business and tech reporter Scott Budman reported that the focus of the day \u2014 and the reaction to it \u2014depended on where you were standing.<\/p>\n
Inside the venue, the emphasis was on utilizing ChatGPT and other AI offerings rolled out by the company to make life easier. Outside, it was about demanding answers regarding safety concerns and fears that the city is turning into an AI-only enclave.<\/p>\n
As OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took the stage to cheers, a crowd outside San Francisco’s Fort Mason chanted his name in protest, shouting, “Sam Altman, get off it; choose people over profit.”<\/p>\n
Inside, the company showcased the latest version of its AI agents, called “Dots”.<\/p>\n
“This is the real-deal version of AI that we’ve always imagined for ourselves. It’s like an AI that always has your back, inspired by movies we all watched growing up,” presenters shared.<\/p>\n
The new agents can answer questions and execute tasks for users, acting as “a second set of eyes across everything I give it access to, and more importantly, a second set of hands to actually take work off my plate.”<\/p>\n
Outside, demonstrators focused on economic inequality and broader anxieties about what AI could do to humanity rather than for humanity. Many argued that the technology’s dominance in San Francisco is forcing long-term residents out.<\/p>\n
“We know that as soon as these IPOs happen, as soon as more money comes flowing into the city, we’re going to see a lot more evictions, and we need to be ready to scale up this fight,” said Molly Goldberg of the SF Anti-Displacement Coalition.<\/p>\n
It is a conflict over both money and safety tied to what all sides believe could be transformational technology.<\/p>\n
