Not only are the two young stars close friends on and off the ice, but as new roommates, their relationship might, at times, mirror that of an old married couple.

“Mack and I kind of got into a little bickering fight on the way in,” Smith told NBC Sports California’s Natalie Noury at Sharks Media Day. “Just which route we were going to take … There was the crash, and he used Maps and I used Waze.

“We went with my route. And it was faster.”

Smith and Celebrini moved in together this summer, and while they have taken the next step in their friendship, not much has changed for the 21- and 20-year-old.

“It’s chill. Not much going on,” Celebrini told Noury about what life is like for the two at home. “It’s fun, I think we both kind of get bored easily, so having someone to do something with I think keeps us busy.”

“We have a lot of sports in our backyard. Like a basketball hoop, we’ve got a volleyball net, soccer, baseball. We kind of got it all.”

Oftentimes when two people live together, regardless of the nature of their relationship, one person typically is the more domestic of the two. For the two Sharks teammates, that is Smith.

“He loves making these like healthy desserts,” Celebrini said, rolling his eyes, when discussing Smith’s interest in baking. “I just let him do his thing.”

“Last night I actually got into a new thing with dates,” Smith described eagerly. “Because dates are pretty good for you, so I made two different little healthy desserts. One is with peanut butter and bananas. But I made homemade Snickers bars, and they’re unbelievable.”

Noury asked both players to share one good thing and one bad thing about being each other’s roommates.

“One good thing? It’s fun being around him, he keeps the house light,” Smith said. “And it’s always fun having guys over, too, where we’re always laughing and joking around. He makes really good chicken, too, I’ll give him that. He made it the other night.

“One bad thing? He kind of just leaves stuff out. And then I clean it up. He just leaves like cardboard boxes out and won’t touch it.”

Celebrini declined to answer, stating it was “too soon” to tell.

“Oh, well now I feel bad,” Smith said when told by Noury that his teammate didn’t answer the question.

Perhaps a conversation for the drive home.

While Smith and Celebrini are adjusting to life as roommates off the ice, there is no question they already have formed a strong bond on it.

The two young stars are foundational pieces for an up-and-coming San Jose team that enters the 2026-27 NHL season with high expectations after flirting with a playoff appearance at the end of the previous campaign.

And if all goes according to plan this season, the two roommates probably will be bickering about which navigation app to use on their way home from playoff games at SAP Center next April.

Download and follow the San Jose Hockey Now podcast

Did we just become best friends?
