San Francisco\u2019s Board of Supervisors voted this week to sustain Parivar Bay Area, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting trans immigrants.\n<\/p>\n

This summer, Parivar Bay Area \u2014 an organization dedicated to supporting trans immigrants \u2014 made a plea<\/a> to San Francisco officials: Help us keep our doors open.<\/p>\n

The space was established just nine months prior, during a colorful Diwali <\/a>event attended by leaders like Supervisor Rafael Mandelman and director of the city\u2019s Office of Transgender Initiatives Honey Mahogany.<\/p>\n

But funding was running out, and co-founder Anjali Rimi began sounding the alarm that Parivar Bay Area was at risk of losing its downtown San Francisco location entirely. Its programming \u2014 including immigration support and leadership development \u2014 had already been halted.<\/p>\n

But since then, things for Rimi and her organization have turned around: This week, the city\u2019s Board of Supervisors unanimously approved<\/a> a resolution to allocate<\/a> $150,000 to Parivar Bay Area through its fiscal sponsor, TransCanWork<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rimi said the money is a \u201clifeline\u201d and that she was \u201cextremely relieved and eternally grateful for the City and County of San Francisco<\/a> for truly coming through in these times and helping us rebuild.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are staying in San Francisco, we\u2019re rebuilding and we\u2019re opening our doors again,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The resolution was sponsored<\/a> by supervisors Mandelman, Connie Chan, Matt Dorsey and Bilal Mahmood. It will now head to Mayor Daniel Lurie\u2019s desk to be signed and approved.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cParivar Bay Area fills a role no other organization does \u2014 it\u2019s the only trans-led group focused on South Asian and Global South trans immigrants,\u201d Mandelman said in a July statement to KQED<\/a>. \u201cBuilding that kind of trust and infrastructure took years, and it\u2019s important to do what we can to keep it in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rimi said she saw ways the San Francisco community came to support Parivar \u2014 the organization received over $5,000 in donations<\/a> \u2014 but the experience highlighted to her that \u201cimpact alone doesn\u2019t guarantee sustainability\u201d and that the long-term future \u201ccannot depend on one source of funding.\u201d<\/p>\n
