the mayor said. “The other thing it does for city staff so that they have the confidence that the city is actually backing them up in law.”

Bass’ approval came hours after the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved the ordinance.

Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson introduced a motion on Feb. 13 requesting that the city attorney codify the mayor’s directive into an ordinance, noting that such orders can be rescinded by future mayoral administrations.

“To ensure lasting accountability and protections for city residents, the components of ED17 must be codified into the city’s administrative and municipal codes,” according to Harris-Dawson’s motion.

The Los Angeles Police Department and the union representing rank-and-file officers, the Los Angeles Police Protective League, have maintained that they adhere to Special Order 40, which ensures that policing is not tied to immigration status.

“Special Order 40 has been in effect since 1979 and ensures that Los Angeles police officers target criminal behavior and not immigration status, and that is the way it ought to be,” according to a statement from the LAPPL.

Los Angeles police officers are required to record federal immigration enforcement activity in the city of Los Angeles…

[27
14,48,52,51,5015,47,50,49
post-481052","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-los-angeles","tag-immigration","tag-la","tag-la-headlines","tag-la-news","tag-lapd","tag-los-angeles","tag-los-angeles-headlines","tag-los-angeles-news
["GET
