As a part of the national <a href=\"https:\/\/festival.si.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Smithsonian Folklife Festivals<\/a>, the Great Valley Gathering will feature art exhibits, cultural workshops and performances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The event will be at Courthouse Park on 1100 Van Ness Ave. Depending on the day, the festival will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtownfresno.org\/do\/great-valley-gathering-free-three-day-festival-presented-by-acta-and-smithsonian-folklife-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">run at different times<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Friday Oct. 2: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday Oct. 3: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday Oct. 4: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is the Smithsonian Festival\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/folklife.si.edu\/news-and-events\/of-the-people-folklife-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first time expanding<\/a> beyond their location in Washington, D.C., hosting events across the country to celebrate America\u2019s 250th anniversary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over <a href=\"https:\/\/gathering.actaonline.org\/artists\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">40 different artists, musicians, performers and culture bearers will attend<\/a> the Great Valley Gathering, with a Saturday night show featuring Fresno rapper Fashawn. Alongside showcasing art, the festival will host <a href=\"https:\/\/gathering.actaonline.org\/food-vendors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food vendors<\/a> from different cultures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ACTA Executive Director and Festival Curator Amy Kitchener described the event as a chance to bring different communities together to celebrate the Central Valley\u2019s diversity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kitchener highlighted the event\u2019s workshops on cultural art, such as lessons on learning new instruments, line dancing, basket weaving and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach artist carries a remarkable story about the Central Valley, America itself and everyone in our community,\u201d Kitchener said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Kitchener, the festival will also include 25 members of California\u2019s Native cultures and communities, who will share living traditions and languages. Kitchener hopes the festival will open dialogue and encourage members of different cultures to learn about each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re often isolated in these different communities and spaces. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a lot of spaces where we come together in our different communities,\u201d Kitchener said. \u201cThe thing that\u2019s most exciting to me is the idea of bringing people together.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As one of the many artists performing, Fashawn said he\u2019s happy to represent hip-hop and his culture on stage. He sees the event as a gathering instead of a festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a gathering in a celebration of our culture, our lifestyles and our love in our expressions,\u201d Fashawn said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>District 3 Supervisor Luis Chavez hopes that the Courthouse Park can become a hub for the community to gather.
