Berkeley tied with Yale University for ninth overall, matching its standing in last year\u2019s list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.K.-based publication evaluated 2,297 universities in 118 countries and territories this year, assessing research-intensive universities in five broad areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry (which measures how much businesses will pay for a university\u2019s research) and international outlook. The publication has named Berkeley as the top public university in the U.S. for 11 of the past 12 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Oxford took the top spot in the 2027 rankings for the 11th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Princeton University and Stanford University tied for third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s one of several top distinctions Berkeley has earned this year. In September\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2026\/09\/01\/uc-berkeley-maintains-its-spot-as-the-worlds-top-producer-of-startups-and-founders\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 PitchBook university rankings<\/a>, Berkeley was No. 1 worldwide for the fourth consecutive year in the number of venture-backed companies founded by undergraduate alumni. Berkeley alumni founded 2,155 such companies, and 2,380 alumni became founders \u2014 more than at any other university. Berkeley also led the world in the number of female graduates who founded companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2026\/09\/21\/uc-berkeley-again-ranked-top-public-university-by-u-s-news-world-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/a> tied Berkeley with UCLA as the nation\u2019s top public university in its 2027 Best Colleges ranking.
