With a heroic late strike from senior midfielder Michael Haikal and a dramatic offside review in the final seconds Michigan clinched a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

The Wolverines controlled much of the opening half, winning five corner kicks and consistently possessing the ball in dangerous areas. Michigan constantly generated chances and dictated the tempo, but its inability to convert kept the Golden Grizzlies within striking distance.

“We played much better in the first half, and it showed based on the stats, chances, opportunities, but we didn’t really get much out of it,” Michigan head coach Chaka Daley said.

The first major setback for the Wolverines came in the 29th minute when freshman defender Andrew Craig went down after receiving a long ball from Oakland. Without one of its reliable defenders, Michigan began to receive increased pressure from the Grizzlies.

Michigan finally broke through in the 43rd minute when senior forward Grayson Elmquist converted on a penalty kick — giving the Wolverines a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

But any momentum garnered from the goal dissipated quickly after the break.

Instead, the Grizzlies took the match into their own hands. Just 36 seconds into the second half, Oakland answered. The Grizzlies midfielder Grant Mateer found the back of the net off an assist from forward Cal Kurzawa, leveling the match at 1-1 and shifting pressure onto Michigan.

Despite again controlling possession and creating chances, the Wolverines struggled to stretch Oakland’s defense and create dangerous opportunities on the sides of the field. Poor field balance prevented Michigan from maximizing attacking advantages.

“We had too many players on one side or too many players on the other side,” Daley said. “We didn’t have enough balance to isolate 1-v-1, 2-v-1 or 3-v-1 ultimately.”

Even with those issues, the Wolverines kept pushing forward. The pair of senior midfielders, Nico Pendleton and Joao Paulo Ramos, played critical roles connecting play through the middle and driving transition opportunities, while senior defender Will Baker anchored the back line with a strong defensive performance.

But those efforts still weren’t quite enough. The Wolverines seemed on track for a disappointing result after the Golden Grizzlies leveled the score early in the second half.

Then, in the 87th minute, Michigan got its breakthrough.

After a ball arrived from the left side and bounced near the top of the box, Haikal found himself with space. While Oakland defenders hesitated and failed to close him down, the senior unleashed a right-footed shot that soared into the top-right corner.

The goal, Haikal’s first of the season, appeared to secure the victory.

And then, with three seconds left on the clock, the Golden Grizzlies thought it had found a dramatic equalizer, tipping a ball into the net at the back post. What followed was a lengthy review that left both sidelines frozen in anticipation.

After several tense moments, officials ruled the play offsides, wiping way Oakland’s last minute goal and allowing Michigan to escape senior night with a victory

“Thank God, we got a little home cooking there at the end with that goal,” Daley said.

The match served as both a celebration and a warning. The Wolverines showed their ability to control play and create chances but lapses in defensive discipline and missed opportunities nearly turned a dominant performance into an almost disappointing result.

Related articles

Senior night wasn’t an easy win, but the Michigan men’s soccer team made sure it was memorable.
