<\/p>\nJust because it’s fall, don’t expect to take out those sweaters. Another heat wave is expected to hit San Diego County, and meteorologists say this will be a long one.<\/p>\n
So, why is it getting so hot? <\/p>\n
“High pressure building over the west, along with easterly winds, will drive up the heat across San Diego, even at the coast,” meteorologist Brooke Martell said. <\/p>\n
That high pressure prompted the National Weather Service to issue an extreme heat warning that will go into effect starting at 10 a.m. Friday until Thursday night for the coast and valleys. Highs will stay in the 90s at the coast and 100-105 inland.<\/p>\n
Although the extreme heat warning is, as of now, expected to expire in less than a week, Chief Meteorologist Sheena Parveen said it’s will likely be extended as the 10-day forecast shows extreme heat stretching into a second weekend.<\/p>\n
“This will be the longest heat wave with temperatures this hot in years,” said Chief Meteorologist Sheena Parveen.<\/p>\n

The hottest days will be Friday through Sunday, with afternoon highs near 20 degrees above normal. Our fire threat will be elevated with the hot, dry weather.<\/p>\n

How to Stay Cool on Hot Days<\/p>\n
If you can’t make it to a cool zone, HHSA has other tips for people, particularly older adults, to stay cool on hot days. The agency recommends:<\/p>\n
Avoiding physical activity during the day and pacing yourself. Instead, plan your exercise between 4 and 7 a.m., typically the coolest part of the day.<\/p>\n
Staying indoors as much as possible. The coolest floors are the lowest floors. Keep your shades and blinds closed as much as possible with your windows slightly open.<\/p>\n
Taking a cold shower.<\/p>\n
Wearing lightweight, light-colored and loose clothes.<\/p>\n
Never leaving children or pets inside vehicles, even with the windows cracked.<\/p>\n
Drinking more fluids than usual. Water is best and alcohol or caffeine can make the heat’s effects worse<\/p>\n
