Culver City has suspended its CityBus services for the weekend following a fatal shooting of a bus driver in Mar Vista Thursday, the city announced on Friday morning.<\/p>\n
“The circumstances surrounding what happened are still being investigated. But today, our hearts are shattered. Their loss will be felt across our City team,” the city said in a social media post.<\/p>\n
A bus operator involved in a verbal dispute with an intoxicated passenger on a Culver CityBus near Mitchell and Centinela avenues around 5:15 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.<\/p>\n
According to police, the apparent altercation began over a wrong turn. <\/p>\n
“We have lost a deeply valued member of our City family to a senseless act of violence,” said Mayor Freddy Puza. “We are grieving the loss of someone who dedicated their time and talents to serving Culver City and who made a meaningful difference through that service every day.” <\/p>\n
On Friday, police continue searching for the suspect of the shooting who they say was last seen wearing a white shirt and left on a bicycle or on foot. A weapon was not recovered at the scene, the police department said.<\/p>\n
The victim has not yet been identified. Police said responding officers located a man in his 40s at the scene, who sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.<\/p>\n
The city said it will provide crisis support services to its staff following the shooting.<\/p>\n
“In response, we are suspending Culver CityBus service throughout the weekend and providing crisis support services to staff.
