LONG BEACH \u2013 The Long Beach Poly football team opened Moore League play with a statement win Friday night by defeating Lakewood 55-0 at Cabrillo High School.<\/p>\n
Poly quarterback Trevor Scott completed 12 of 17 passes for five touchdowns and 270 yards. Zion Anderson caught five passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Jeron Johnson II led the Poly rushing attack by carrying the ball 11 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns.<\/p>\n
Kasim Shepherd had an interception for the Jackrabbits while Toa Cagnolotti had the team\u2019s lone sack.<\/p>\n
Scott attributed his performance to his teammates.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels great,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI get to ball with my brothers and let them make me look good.\u201d<\/p>\n
To Poly coach Travon Patterson, Scott\u2019s play masked his inexperience.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s ever taken a snap at the varsity level like he did today,\u201d Patterson said. \u201cBut the way he played today you couldn\u2019t tell and that\u2019s what I liked the most about him. His composure, the way he commanded the game and extended the plays with his legs, that was a good thing to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
After forcing a Lakewood fumble turnover on its first drive, Poly overcame 20 yards worth of penalties to score on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Jayden Coley for a 7-0 lead after a Jonas Mendoza extra point just 1:44 into the first quarter.<\/p>\n
Poly (3-4, 1-0) scored three more times in the first quarter, on an 8-yard touchdown run by Elijah Dawson and then on two passing touchdowns from Scott. He tossed a 31-yard TD pass to Anderson and and a 44-yarder to Donte Wright Jr. to take a 29-0 lead after a 2-point conversion.<\/p>\n
Johnson caught fire in the second half, breaking off runs of 31 yards and 22 yards, before punching in a 9-yard touchdown run for a 36-0 lead with 9:31 left in the half.<\/p>\n
Lakewood (2-5, 0-1) struggled to move the ball. Aidan Kautsky completed 6 of 13 passes for 51 yards. He threw one interception. Jacob Carey carried the ball 12 times for 18 yards. Jayden Moore caught one pass for 33 yards, the Lancers\u2019 longest offensive play.<\/p>\n
Poly capped off its statement first half scoring a touchdown on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Anderson again for a 43-0 lead with 14 seconds left.<\/p>\n
Scott felt the chemistry with Anderson.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe always do it in practice,\u201d Scott said. \u201cWe\u2019re repping it a lot. I can throw the ball to him with me eyes closed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Poly added a touchdown from Scott to Coley in the third quarter for a 49-0 after a foiled extra point attempt, then scored again to start the fourth quarter on an 11-yard Jeron Johnson II run for a 55-0 lead after a missed extra point.<\/p>\n
Lakewood coach Mario Morales was at a loss for words after the game.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t have anything to say,\u201d Morales said. \u201cI told the players I don\u2019t know what to tell them. It was frustrating on our end. I thought we\u2019d have a better effort.
