FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Businesses in Fresno’s Tower District are looking for solutions after a man was shot and killed near Olive and Linden avenues last weekend, marking the latest in a series of shooting incidents reported in the area over the past year.<\/p>\n
The fatal shooting claimed the life of 28-year-old Tyrone Miles early Saturday morning. The shooting occurred outside MIA Nightclub after bars had closed for the night.<\/p>\n
Business owners said the violence is taking a toll on a district known for its nightlife and community gathering spaces.<\/p>\n
“To see it at your front door, in a place that’s beloved by the community to see this type of violence happen, it’s very disheartening and discouraging to the city as well as the tower district,” said Lewis Everek, owner of Everek Hospitality Group.<\/p>\n
Security video captured a group of people arguing before a gunshot was heard. Seconds later, an officer ran to Miles, who was on the ground.<\/p>\n
Everek said large crowds, late-night activity and other factors can contribute to safety concerns.<\/p>\n
“When you put that many people in one spot from all over the city with different types of backgrounds and then you involve alcohol or late night hours and whatever factors are out in the street at 3 a.m. there’s a high probability for a problem,” Everek said.<\/p>\n
The deadly shooting follows other incidents in the district. Last month, gunfire broke out in the Tower District and sent one man to the hospital. In May, police arrested 27-year-old Charles Muhammad in connection with another shooting.<\/p>\n
Fresno City Councilmember Miguel Arias, who represents part of the Tower District, said law enforcement will continue to target criminal activity in the area.<\/p>\n
“If you misbehave and you’re responsible for fights, for a shooting, or any type of activity, whether its in Tower District or Downtown Fresno, you will be arrested, you will be prosecuted, you will be spending some time in jail,” Arias said.<\/p>\n
City leaders said visitors to the district should expect a visible police presence during busy weekend hours. Arias said between 20 and 40 officers could be on patrol at any given time.<\/p>\n
“At any given time we will probably have between 20 and 40 officers,” Arias said.<\/p>\n
Fresno police believe Saturday morning’s shooting was gang-related. Arias said collaboration with local businesses is also critical to preventing violent crime in the Tower District.<\/p>\n
