Stefani\u2019s office who was <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/09\/san-francisco-elected-officials-call-for-feds-to-release-ho-yin-mo-detained-assembly-legislative-aide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detained by immigrarion agents on Sept. 17<\/a> in Las Vegas, was released from custody today, according to Stefani\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mo was granted bond by an immigration judge in a hearing in a court in Las Vegas on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m overwhelmed with gratitude for the tireless work of Assemblymember Stafeni, my legal counsel and every individual who advocated on my behalf,\u201d Mo said in a press release from Stefani\u2019s office. \u201cI\u2019m excited to return to my work serving San Franciscans, who have shown time and again what community truly means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dee Sull, Mo\u2019s attorney, said, \u201cThe Trump administration has placed people into removal proceedings even while they were lawfully pursuing their immigration status in the United States, causing chaos for individuals and families who followed the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stefani said in the statement that she\u2019s grateful \u201cto everyone preparing to fight alongside him as he continues through the immigration process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is a lawful public servant\u201d who, she said, \u201cshould never have been detained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mo, a Hong Kong native who lawfully entered the country on a temporary basis on Jan. 13, 2020, was detained after he failedto depart by May 15, 2020, according to a statement by the Department of Homeland Security.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/09\/ho-yin-mo-ice-detention-ded-hong-kong\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Immigration experts and friends of Mo<\/a>, however, said the government omitted a vital detail: It\u2019s highly likely that <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/09\/ho-yin-mo-ice-detention-ded-hong-kong\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mo is covered by Deferred Enforced Departure<\/a>, a Biden-era presidential directive that allows eligible Hong Kong residents to work in the United States and protects them from deportation until 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mo was previously a primetime <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/06\/yesterdays-chinese-language-reporters-are-todays-political-aides\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anchor<\/a> for Chinese-language TV station KTSF, and worked as a <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/06\/yesterdays-chinese-language-reporters-are-todays-political-aides\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">field organizer<\/a> for Mayor London Breed\u2019s 2024 campaign. <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/09\/san-francisco-elected-officials-call-for-feds-to-release-ho-yin-mo-detained-assembly-legislative-aide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Almost every politician in San Francisco City Hall<\/a> had called for his release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His colleague established a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/hoyinmo\/fb\/o?attribution_id=sl%3A51f53b0b-d56d-4f18-aec6-89e0a7dd7ed3&amp;ts=1790812313&amp;utm_campaign=natman_today_topbar_ios&amp;utm_medium=customer&amp;utm_source=copy_link&amp;video_sharing=enabled\"
