To be a really good team, you’ve got to do it again.”

Replicating Thursday’s atmosphere at the Shark Tank, anyway, might not be easy.

The Sharks’ game against the Panthers had a playoff-type feel, with fights, scrums, big hits, and some dazzling goals in a back-and-forth game.

The Sharks built a 3-0 lead by the midway point of the second period with two goals from forward Will Smith, one on the power play and one shorthanded, and another from winger Mason Marchment.

New captain Macklin Celebrini finished with three assists, including one on Cagnoni’s goal. He had the primary assist on both of Smith’s goals.

The Panthers, Stanley Cup champions in 2024 and 2025, answered back, with Eetu Luostarinen scoring a power-play goal with 2:50 left in the second period before he and Matthew Tkachuk scored 17 seconds apart in the third.

Instead of folding, though, the Sharks withstood another Panthers push and held on to force overtime.

“Maybe in years prior, we would start freaking out a little bit and kind of get down in the dumps,” Smith said of blowing a three-goal lead. “But this year, there’s no quit, and we finished the job.”

The Sharks couldn’t convert on a power play that carried into overtime, but with less than two minutes remaining in the extra session, Cagnoni took a pass from Smith and beat Panthers goalie Akira Schmid five-hole for his first career NHL goal.

“Pretty unreal. Probably the best goal of my life,” Cagnoni said. “Hard to write one better than an overtime winner. People dream of playing (in the NHL). I feel like I reenacted that a couple times, but (it’s an) unreal feeling.”

Sharks defenseman Darnell Nurse, now starting his 13th NHL season, said for a regular season game, “That’s as loud as you’re going to hear. The emotion, the energy that was in the building, it was a lot of fun.”

It was unclear which goalie the Sharks will start against the Kings, but Warsofsky has to feel good about the way Yaroslav Askarov began the year.

Askarov finished with 23 saves against the Panthers and was at his best on the penalty kill, making eight saves.

Askarov looked calm in two preseason games; the question was whether he could keep it up when the regular season started. He mostly answered the bell, with the goal allowed to Luostarinen coming after a couple of crazy bounces in front of the net.

In two preseason starts, Askarov went 1-0-1 with a stellar .942 save percentage.

Maybe the Sharks’ biggest issue Thursday was their lack of discipline at times.

The Sharks were shorthanded for over 10 minutes, with Nurse taking two cross-checking penalties, and Kiefer Sherwood being assessed a double-minor for high-sticking Aleksander Barkov midway through the second period. Barkov sustained a serious-looking lower body injury later in the second period and did not return.

“We have to be a little bit more composed at times,” Warsofsky said. “We can’t kill six, seven penalties a game against some really good teams. It doesn’t matter what team it is; they’re going to eventually put one in the back of the net.

“We’ve got to learn from that, but we also want to ride that line. We want to be hard to play against. We don’t want to get pushed around. We’re going to protect each other.”

The Kings began the season with an 8-4 road loss to the Colorado Avalanche and went 1-0-2 against the Sharks last season.

The Sharks haven’t won their first two home games in a season since 2016.

“You’ve got to be consistent with your identity as a hockey team,” Warsofsky said. “You’ve got to pick up and learn from your mistakes and correct them. If we’re going to be a really good hockey team in this league, we’ve got to do it again and turn the page. It’s going to be a completely different game.”

[29
401,402,181,404,88,90,89,98,403,94685,127
post-483963","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-jose","tag-hockey","tag-inside-sports","tag-latest-headlines","tag-nhl","tag-san-jose","tag-san-jose-headlines","tag-san-jose-news","tag-san-jose-sharks","tag-sharks-alert","tag-social-alert","tag-sports
["GET
