A bitter California school board feud has erupted into a full-blown spying scandal<\/a> after surveillance footage appeared to show a trustee secretly planting an electronic device beneath the desk of two fellow board members, prompting a police investigation and calls for resignations.<\/p>\n

Temecula Valley Unified School District<\/a> board members Emil Barham and Steven Schwartz said they were stunned after seeing footage from a Sept. 22 meeting that showed Trustee Melinda Anderson approaching their shared desk, kneeling down and placing a small object underneath it.<\/p>\n

The footage appears to show fellow Trustee Jennifer Wiersma nearby as Anderson handles the device.<\/p>\n

“I was in shock; it was disbelief,” Barham told ABC7<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Literally I was flabbergasted,” Schwartz said.<\/p>\n

Schwartz blasted the incident as an invasion of privacy and called for both Anderson and Wiersma to step down.<\/p>\n

“The two of them need to resign immediately,” he told the outlet. “We cannot have people like that on the board with us, who are so sneaky and distrustful.”<\/p>\n

Additional surveillance footage appears to show Anderson later returning to the desk and retrieving the mystery device after the meeting.<\/p>\n

“What they did is disgraceful \u2014 invading people’s privacy and recording fellow board members,” Schwartz told The Sun<\/a>. “When we sit in board meetings, we talk about baseball and our grandkids. We don’t talk about anything she could possibly want to record.”<\/p>\n

But Anderson has offered a dramatically different account of the escalating boardroom battle.<\/p>\n

She announced Oct. 1 that she plans to resign and said she had begun carrying a small microphone because she felt threatened and wanted to document what was being said to her.<\/p>\n

“For a period of time, I did begin carrying a small microphone with me to document the threats being said to me,” Anderson said in an Instagram video<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Barham strongly denied threatening Anderson.<\/p>\n

“There is no evidence of any threats, and if there were evidence of any threats, where’s the police report?” he told the outlet.<\/p>\n

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is now investigating allegations that someone was secretly recorded at the district office.<\/p>\n

Deputies were called Sept. 26 to the 31000 block of Rancho Vista Road after a reporting party alleged that “a subject had recorded surreptitiously at the location,” according to the department.<\/p>\n

The Southwest Sheriff’s Station Investigation Bureau took over the case. Authorities have not announced whether investigators determined what the device was, whether it recorded any conversations or whether any laws were violated.<\/p>\n

The district acknowledged both the video and investigation but declined to weigh in on whether a crime occurred.<\/p>\n

“Our responsibility is to support our students and staff and ensure the daily work of our schools continues with care and professionalism,” the district said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Board President Joseph Komrosky called the controversy “pure politics among trustees at the highest level” and said questions about possible criminal conduct should be left to law enforcement.<\/p>\n

The explosive allegations are the latest chapter in years of bitter infighting surrounding the five-member board, which oversees a district serving roughly 28,000 students.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the board voted 3-2 to censure Barham following allegations from Anderson of “intimidation and unprofessional behavior.” Barham has maintained he did nothing wrong and says authorities previously found no criminal conduct.<\/p>\n

Anderson, meanwhile, said she is working with attorneys to determine when and how she will formally leave her position.<\/p>\n

“Frankly, as a woman, as a mom, and as a public servant, I should not have to carry a recording device to document threats in order to protect my family,” she said.<\/p>\n

Barham characterized Anderson’s latest accusations as an attempt to shift attention away from the device controversy, while Schwartz said he has never witnessed Barham threaten her.<\/p>\n

For now, the disputed mystery device \u2014\u00a0and exactly what, if anything, it captured beneath the school board desk \u2014\u00a0remains at the center of a police investigation and an increasingly ugly boardroom fight.<\/p>\n
