The Solana Beach City Council voted 4-1 Sept. 30 to approve new regulations for keeping residential chickens and bees.

The ordinance is pending a second reading.

The city’s existing laws allowed a maximum 25 chickens on properties that were at least 20,000 square feet. The updates include requiring three minimum, 10 maximum on at least 2,000 square feet, and expanding coop eligibility to more residential zones. Permits would not be required as long as residents are within the terms of the ordinance.

“If a chicken coop does not meet the regulations outlined above, a building permit would be required and staff would review that submittal for compliance with Solana Beach Municipal Code and the California Building Code,” according to a council agenda report. “Nuisance issues related to the keeping of chickens and/or bees shall be handled by Code Enforcement when an official code enforcement complaint form has been submitted to the City.”

All coops have to be “well-ventilated and easily cleaned,” according to the agenda report, as well as predator-proof.

The new ordinance also allows apiaries for beekeeping, which were previously banned citywide. According to the council agenda report, beehives won’t be allowed between the principal residence and the front property line, but can be in the buildable area behind the primary structure or within the rear yard setback.

Residents will also have to make sure there is “a clean reliable water source such as a shallow basin with landing spots, such as rocks or sticks, shall be provided within 100 feet of the hive,” according to the agenda report.

Solana Beach Deputy Mayor Jill MacDonald was the only vote against the ordinance. She said she was concerned about attracting coyotes or other wild animals that could kill her dog.

“I already have issues with wildlife in my yard and I have a small dog,” MacDonald said, “and I now have a golf club in my backyard because I’ve had a coyote and a bobcat in the last two months in my yard during daylight hours and I would prefer that my neighbors didn’t have other things that might attract wildlife to my yard because I’d like to keep my dog alive.”

The Solana Beach City Council voted 4-1 Sept. 30 to approve new regulations for keeping residential chickens and…

[28
310,311,74,76,75
post-484333","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-del-mar-times","tag-del-mar-times-news","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news
["GET
