SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Before members of Corremos Sacramento begin walking and running around Land Park, they find their rhythm.

Latin music fills the air as participants dance, stretch, and prepare to move. The warm-up resembles a family celebration, with a DJ playing upbeat music as people of different ages, body types, and athletic abilities follow along.

“Our warm-up involves a little bit of some Latino dance moves, and some stretches as well,” warm-up leader Mariana Reyes said. “We combine the music with the moves, so it’s kind of a nice, fun warm-up.”

But Reyes said the club offers more than exercise.

“It’s not just about running,” she said. “It’s about getting outdoors and building community.”

Corremos means “we run” in Spanish. Founder Dalia Ramirez-Robles said the Latino-led club is designed to be about much more than logging miles.

“We want people to feel safe here, so we really create a fun cultural experience, but then also feel that family familiarity, like we’re hanging out at a carne asada, but we’re also going to go for a walk or a run,” Ramirez-Robles said.

Ramirez-Robles began working to bring a Latino running group to Sacramento in 2021. Corremos Sacramento officially launched in July 2022, filling what she saw as a void in the area’s running community.

“There weren’t a lot of groups, and there weren’t a lot of people that looked like me in the scene,” she said.

Since then, Corremos Sacramento has grown, drawing dozens of people to its Monday gatherings and building relationships with running organizations, athletic brands and local food vendors.

Participants can run or walk at their own pace

There is no pressure to be the fastest person on the course. Some participants run, while others walk. Parents push children in strollers, families exercise together, and some members bring their dogs.

Ruby Pineda joined the group after having her baby and searching for a community that could help her return to running. She initially walked the route before gradually beginning to run again.

“Just come out,” Pineda said. “Honestly, I started walking, and I just started doing the running now, within the last month or so. So I would say just start with the walk.”

Pineda said the Spanish-language music and culturally inclusive warm-ups also allow her to share the experience with her son.

“I love that, especially because my son comes, and I want him to grow around the culture,” she said. “So I love that for him, too.”

Sharing Latino culture across generations

That connection between generations also brought Yoli Rodriguez-Thompson to the club with her 6-year-old daughter, Julietta.

Rodriguez-Thompson said her daughter is Mexican American and British, and she wants her to remain connected to her Mexican heritage.

“That’s why I like to bring her around the community and the music,” Rodriguez-Thompson said.

For members, Corremos Sacramento has helped transform running from a solo sport into a shared journey. The club offers a place to exercise while celebrating Latino culture, supporting families and building friendships.

The message participants carry along the course is one of cultural pride and collective strength: “¡Viva México!” and “¡Que viva Latinoamérica!”
