Back then, there were cushioned tops for the stone seating.<\/p>\n<p>                                    Photo by Eastsider Staffer Brenda Rees<\/p>\n<p>Eagle Rock\u2014The 1931 Sylvan Amphitheater in Eagle Rock\u2019s Yosemite Park has hosted parades, concerts and even a pillow fight. Now it\u00a0is ready for a new chapter.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m., the bucolic hillside will hold the free outdoor concert\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tera90041.org\/sylvan-sounds-free-concert-in-the-park-on-october-10th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sylvan Sounds<\/a>. Scheduled to perform are\u00a0Jeff Parker and Jeremiah Chiu (as the Jeff Parker Expansion Duo), along with other to-be-announced artists. Scottie McNiece will DJ before and after the performances, which are being curated by Brian Akio Martinez and Noah Klein. Martinez programmed\u00a0the Eagle Rock Music Festival from 2000 to 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n                Success! There was an error processing your request.&#13;\n            <\/p>\n<p>Concert-goers are encouraged to bring blankets and picnics to enjoy the music, which Michael MacDonald, president of <a href=\"https:\/\/tera90041.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Eagle Rock Association (TERA)<\/a>, describes as ambient jazz. It&#8217;s been unused for years, but an October 10 free concert may encourage a revival.<\/p>\n<p>                                    Photo by Eastsider Staffer Brenda Rees<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful space that needs more activity,\u201d said MacDonald, who envisions the amphitheater holding\u00a0\u201cShakespeare in the Park\u201d theater productions, a music\u00a0series, dance and art programs, and family-friendly events.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n                Success! There was an error processing your request.&#13;\n            <\/p>\n<p>The amphitheater was a New Deal-era emergency employment bond project that also included the creation of a bathhouse for the nearby pool. Construction was speedy; in October 1931, only six months after the funds were approved, the amphitheater was ready for a Halloween event. Children and adults enjoyed ghost stories, dancing, a treasure hunt,\u00a0a pillow fight and an\u00a0evening bonfire.<\/p>\n<p>For decades\u00a0it\u00a0hosted summer theater programs, recitals and high school graduations. However, starting in the 1970s, drug abuse, burglaries and harassment plagued Yosemite Park.
