And no one wearing teal will complain about picking up another two points.

But the Sharks will want to clean up a few things before they begin a two-game road trip against the Dallas Stars on Monday.

“There were a lot of areas that we weren’t very good at,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said. “But can’t apologize for two points in this league, so we’ve got to take it and move on and get better in a lot of areas.”

Igor Chernyshov scored his second goal of the game at the 3:18 mark of overtime, taking a pass from Macklin Celebrini and one-timing it past Kings goalie Anton Forsberg. Celebrini began the play in 3-on-3 overtime by knocking Kings center Quinton Byfield off the puck deep in the Sharks’ zone before taking over and starting up the ice.

Chernyshov also scored a breakaway goal 4:08 into the third period, and Tyler Toffoli, Kiefer Sherwood, and Nolan Allan also scored, giving the Sharks their first 2-0-0 record since the start of the 2021-22 season.

Rookie winger Ivar Stenberg picked up his first NHL point, assisting on Toffoli’s power-play goal 1:48 into the second period.

Two days after he made 23 saves in the Sharks’ 4-3 overtime win over the Florida Panthers, Yaroslav Askarov might be the biggest reason why the team remains unbeaten, as he made 31 saves, including 12 in a one-sided third period in favor of Los Angeles.

“We all believe in him,” Toffoli said of Askarov. “We know what he’s capable of, and he’s pretty much won us both these games. So we have a lot more to give, and we all know that we can all get better. But we’re definitely in a good place.”

Takeaways from Saturday’s game

STENBERG ARRIVES

Stenberg is a big fan of Mats Zuccarello, a similarly built left wing now in his 17th NHL season. So it was a little weird to play against him, not to mention Adrian Kempe and Artemi Panarin, in an NHL game.

“Yeah, it’s crazy,” Stenberg said. “I liked watching those guys growing up, and playing Zuccarello is pretty huge for me. He’s a good player.”

So is Stenberg, who appears to be in an ideal spot in his rookie season with the Sharks.

Unlike many players picked first or second overall, Stenberg doesn’t need to come in and be a savior for the Sharks, who already have Celebrini and Will Smith as their leading scorers. Stenberg also joins a team that is not only coming out of a rebuild, but is expected to be in the mix for a playoff spot.

With the Sharks on a power play, Stenberg, on the left flank, took a pass from Celebrini and found Toffoli on the doorstep for a tap-in goal.

Stenberg, who has been on the Sharks’ second line with center Alexander Wennberg and Collin Graf since the start of training camp over three weeks ago, also logged 10:27 of ice time and blocked one shot through two periods Saturday. He finished with 15:37 of ice time against the Kings.

Stenberg is on the second line with Wennberg, the Sharks’ top shutdown centerman, because of his already strong two-way play, which helped him become the No. 2 overall pick in June’s NHL draft. Stenberg had 13:35 of ice time in his NHL debut.

“He’s a great player,” Toffoli said of Stenberg. “He does everything on the ice. I think there’s a reason why he’s playing with (Wennberg) and playing against other teams’ top lines, and obviously, very happy, selfishly, that he made that pass to me.”

TOO MANY MISTAKES

Saturday’s game might have been perfect for Warsofsky. He gets the two points, but he also has plenty to point out to his players the next time they go over video.

The Sharks were listed with 25 giveaways on Saturday, five more than they had Thursday. Michael Misa was dinged with five giveaways, although they might not have all been on him, and Celebrini was listed as having four.

The Sharks led 4-3 in the third period when Allan turned around in his own zone and fired the puck almost blindly up the boards. It was easy pickings for Byfield, who quickly fed a diagonal pass to Panarin for a one-timer that got past Askarov on the short side.

Warsofsky sees these kinds of miscues as being easily correctable, but that doesn’t make them easier to swallow in the moment.

“We needed to kind of simplify our game,” Warsofsky said. “There’s going to be nights where you don’t really have your hands, maybe you don’t have your legs, but you’ve got to have your brain. That was kind of the message, and we’ve just got to play harder. We’ve got to start finishing and being a little bit more physical. Those are systematic things that we need to do better.

The Sharks also took three penalties and gave up two power-play goals, and were simply outworked and outskated by the Kings for large portions of the games.

Askarov had 17 saves through two periods and was forced to make 28 saves during 5-on-5 play. The Sharks managed just 17 shots in regulation time during 5-on-5 play. Askarov also came up big on Thursday with 23 saves in the Sharks’ 4-3 overtime win over the Florida Panthers.

MATCHING UP

The Sharks finished in fifth place in the Pacific Division last season, four points behind the Kings for the second and final wild card spot in the Western Conference. To make the playoffs for the first time since 2019, they probably need to leapfrog Los Angeles, with Edmonton and Vegas thought to be division favorites.

This is a different Los Angeles team, though. Longtime center Anze Kopitar has retired, leaving the Kings a bit thin down the middle, but they’re playing at a much quicker pace than before under first-year coach Peter Laviolette, who has always preferred an up-tempo style.

That caused problems in the first period. After the Kings moved the puck quickly through the neutral zone, Allan had to haul down Byfield, who crashed into the Sharks net.

On the ensuing power play, Panarin held the puck below the faceoff dot to the right of Askarov before he zipped a seam pass through Jacob Trouba to Adrian Kempe, who one-timed a shot past Askarov for a 1-0 Kings lead.

SAN JOSE — Another announced sellout crowd at SAP Center watched the San Jose Sharks beat the Los…

[29
401,402,181,404,88,90,89,98,403,127
post-485098","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-jose","tag-hockey","tag-inside-sports","tag-latest-headlines","tag-nhl","tag-san-jose","tag-san-jose-headlines","tag-san-jose-news","tag-san-jose-sharks","tag-sharks-alert","tag-sports
["GET
