{"id":485106,"date":"2026-10-04T20:46:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T20:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/485106\/"},"modified":"2026-10-04T20:46:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T20:46:10","slug":"hammond-and-marusinova-capture-doubles-title-at-horizon-league-individual-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/485106\/","title":{"rendered":"Hammond and Maru\u0161inov\u00e1 Capture Doubles Title at Horizon League Individual Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n                    &#13;<br \/>\n                        Story Links&#13;<br \/>\n                        &#13;<\/p>\n<p>                     CLEVELAND, Ohio \u2013 Senior <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/edie-hammond\/12435\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12435\" target=\"_blank\">Edie Hammond<\/a> and graduate student <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/martina-maru-inov-\/13017\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martina Maru\u0161inov\u00e1<\/a> emerged as champions at the Horizon League Individual Championship, winning the doubles title on Sunday, Oct. 4, in Cleveland, Ohio, and securing a spot in the ITA Conference Masters Championships.<\/p>\n<p>The championship marks Oakland&#8217;s second Horizon League Individual Championship title, as junior <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/martyna-piechowicz\/12438\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12438\" target=\"_blank\">Martyna Piechowicz<\/a> won the singles title in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by Cleveland State, the third annual tournament featured a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw. Hammond and Maru\u0161inov\u00e1 entered as the No. 1-ranked doubles team, while Maru\u0161inov\u00e1 was also ranked No. 1 in singles.<\/p>\n<p>Hammond and Maru\u0161inov\u00e1 opened doubles on Friday with an 8-0 sweep against Milwaukee&#8217;s Karolina Skowronska and Nikola Nikolajeva. The top-seeded duo battled through a tight quarterfinal Saturday, defeating Northern Illinois&#8217; Rebecca Garcia Miralles and Sophia Shiyakhta, 9-8 (6).<\/p>\n<p>The semifinal was more decisive, as Hammond and Maru\u0161inov\u00e1 earned an 8-3 win over the No. 4-ranked team from Northern Illinois, Natalia Varela Herrera and Lucia Yecora.<\/p>\n<p>Oakland reached the Horizon League doubles final for the first time, where Hammond and Maru\u0161inov\u00e1 faced Cleveland State&#8217;s Laura Tapia and Anna McKnight in the championship game. In a tightly contested championship, the Golden Grizzlies prevailed with a 9-7 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/oliwia-klimas\/12440\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12440\" target=\"_blank\">Oliwia Klimas<\/a> and Piechowicz also advanced to the semifinals after defeating the No. 3-ranked team from Northern Illinois in the opening round and Cleveland State in the quarterfinals. The pair fell to Tapia and McKnight, 8-5, in the semifinal match. Junior <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/nisa-bulut\/12434\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12434\" target=\"_blank\">Nisa Bulut<\/a> and senior <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/emilia-jarvinen\/12436\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12436\" target=\"_blank\">Emilia Jarvinen<\/a> opened with a 8-2 win over Youngstown State before falling to the eventual runner-ups, 8-1, in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>In singles play, Maru\u0161inov\u00e1, Piechowicz, Hammond, and Bulut each won their opening-round matches. Klimas fell to the eventual champion, No. 5 Irmak Budak of Northern Illinois, while No. 7-ranked Natalia Castaneda defeated freshman <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/isabella-jaray\/13016\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"13016\" target=\"_blank\">Isabella Jaray<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Freshmen <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/alison-doka\/13015\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"13015\" target=\"_blank\">Alison Doka<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/goldengrizzlies.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\/roster\/michelle-berkovich\/13014\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"13014\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Berkovich<\/a> competed in the singles back draw. Doka fell to No. 6-ranked Skowronska after losing to Bulut, while Berkovich beat Milwaukee&#8217;s Honoka Yamashita.<\/p>\n<p>Hammond posted Oakland&#8217;s top single result, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Garcia Miralles, 6-2, 6-1.<\/p>\n<p>With the doubles victory, Hammond and Maru\u0161inov\u00e1 will travel to Rome, Ga., for the <a href=\"https:\/\/wearecollegetennis.com\/championships\/ita-conference-masters-championships\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ITA Conference Masters Championships<\/a>.
