{"id":485136,"date":"2026-10-04T21:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T21:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/485136\/"},"modified":"2026-10-04T21:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T21:24:08","slug":"prolonged-socal-heat-wave-continues-as-records-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/485136\/","title":{"rendered":"Prolonged SoCal heat wave continues as records fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOS ANGELES \u2014 A brutal October heat wave continued across the Southland Sunday, with more triple-digit heat in the forecast after some temperature records fell Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Fairly widespread highs in the 90s to low 100s are expected again Sunday and Monday for the valleys and even many coastal areas, and more records could be broken Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n<p>Highs are forecast to be 15 to 27 degrees above normal for this time of year, with unusually high overnight lows making things even worse.<\/p>\n<p>Some relief is expected by Thursday, with significant cooling by next weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Extreme heat warnings remain in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday for coastal and valley areas of Los Angeles County and for coastal and inland Orange County.<\/p>\n<p>The following daily temperature records were set on Saturday, according to the NWS:<\/p>\n<p>102 degrees at Hollywood Burbank Airport, breaking the old record of 101 set in 1943.<br \/>\n105 degrees in Anaheim, breaking the old record of 103 set in 2014.<br \/>\n107 degrees in Santa Ana, breaking the old record of 102 set in 2014.<br \/>\nA record low of 76 was set in Anaheim, breaking the old record of 69 set in 2018.<br \/>\nA record low of 72 was set in Santa Ana, breaking the old record of 68 set in 2018.<br \/>\nA record low of 70 was set in Newport Beach, breaking the old record of 69 set in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Records were also set Friday, including in downtown Los Angeles (103 degrees), Long Beach Airport (103), Anaheim (103) and Santa Ana (105).<\/p>\n<p>With electrical demand expected to soar as residents crank up their air conditioners, power providers were urging customers to conserve wherever possible to help avoid outages.<\/p>\n<p>The California Independent System Operator, or Cal-ISO, which manages the state&#8217;s power grid, issued a &#8220;Restricted Maintenance Operations&#8221; notice for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, urging suppliers &#8220;to avoid taking actions which may jeopardize generator and\/or transmission availability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are not forecasting any supply shortfalls at this time, but wanted to prepare consumers in the event that we need to call a Flex Alert,&#8221; according to a statement from the agency. &#8220;We will continue to monitor forecasted demand and supply conditions and will provide additional updates as necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Flex Alert is issued when Cal-ISO believes power demand may exceed supply. The alert is a voluntary call for conservation by residents. If conditions worsen, Cal-ISO could issue additional emergency alerts, potentially leading to rolling blackouts in the most critical power-shortage situations.<\/p>\n<p>Power companies have offered a series of tips for residents to conserve energy. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power suggests residents take steps such as:<\/p>\n<p>setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher to manage energy use during hottest parts of the day.<br \/>\navoiding the use of major appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and vacuum cleaners.<br \/>\navoiding the use of stoves or ovens that can increase indoor heat.<br \/>\nclosing curtains and blinds to reduce sunlight in the home.<br \/>\nturn off lights and other electrical equipment when not in use.<br \/>\nunplug items such as cell phone chargers, microwave ovens and other appliances that use power even when they are not in use.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours when possible and use air-conditioned spaces or cooling centers if they are unable to keep their homes cool.<\/p>\n<p>Residents without access to air conditioning can find cooling centers, splash pads and community pools by calling 211, county officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department urged residents without air conditioning to use public libraries, recreation facilities, senior centers or other air-conditioned public buildings.
