The RBI capitalized on one of three Brewers errors, scoring Fernando Tatis Jr. from second base after Machado had worked another walk.

The Padres are 3-for-18 so far with runners in scoring position in the series. France’s second RBI was the first run scored off the Brewers’ bullpen (9 IP) after chasing Jacob Misiorowski after four innings on Saturday (2 ER) and Logan Henderson after five innings (2 ER, 1 R) on Sunday.

“One of the best staffs in the game,” France said. “Hits are going to be hard to come by, but at the end of the day, if you want to win, you got to get it done.”

France is doing his part, batting .467/.529/.533 through four postseason games. He collected his lone extra-base hit, a double, in the sweep of the Cubs and was certain he’d added another on Saturday when he sent a 105.3 mph drive on a 49-degree arc toward the left-field corner.

France stayed near the batter’s box after his follow-through and watched the ball strike a cable near the roof of American Family Field, change its trajectory and drop into Chourio’s glove.

The ground rules here say any ball that strikes the roof in fair territory is in play, and a replay review upheld the out call on the field.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy, noting he’d never seen a ball hit the roof in his 11 years in Milwaukee, was certain the ball was headed foul. His catcher, William Contreras, thought the ball would have shattered the glass to the X-Golf facility on the third deck in left field. Several Padres thought it was a conundrum that the analytics that run the game these days should at least be able to solve, but only 11 batted balls with a 49-degree launch angle in the pitch-tracking era (2008) have resulted in home runs.

The bottom line: Who knows?

And it didn’t matter to France one lick that the roof was open on Sunday for first pitch on a sunny, 67-degree day.

“Didn’t really matter,” he said. “I mean, the chances of that happening twice are very slim.”

May day

Brewers manager Pat Murphy didn’t hesitate to name a Game 3 starter Sunday morning — before Game 2 and before the off-day:

Dustin May.

The former Dodger has a 3.14 ERA in 86 career innings against the Padres and a 1.23 ERA in three starts against them this year. He struck out seven in six quality innings (3 R, 2 ER) as a Cardinal in a loss at Petco Park, fanned nine in a one-hit shutout in St. Louis and, after the trade to Milwaukee, struck out seven over 4⅔ shutout innings in a no-decision.

“He’s pitched fantastic against the Padres,” Murphy said. “He’s got experience and we brought him in to do that.”

Padres manager Craig Stammen also named his Game 3 starter before Sunday’s game: Nick Pivetta, who has an 8.76 ERA in five career starts against the Brewers, the last in 2025 (5 ⅔ IP, 3 ER, 5 BBs, 5 Ks).

Up and Adam

Quadriceps surgery ended Jason Adam’s 2025 season a month before the postseason. A shoulder injury threatened to again bar the 35-year-old right-hander from pitching in October, but Adam ramped up in time for two tuneup appearances in the last week of the season.

He’s since thrown two scoreless innings across two appearances, throwing a scoreless inning at the Cubs and surviving a walk on Saturday against the Brewers.

“Yeah, bounce-back is good; injury feels great,” Adam said. “Every outing, you feel more in sync. So that’s great. Want to be peaking at the right time. But I feel fully healthy, ready to go. Arm feels good. Leg feels good. Body feels good. So I’m hoping that I can pitch every game the rest of the way.”

MILWAUKEE — Ty France would have loved to have put his cable ball behind him completely after the…

[28
181,1334,74,76,75,2611,127
post-485484","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-latest-headlines","tag-mlb","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news","tag-san-diego-padres","tag-sports
["GET
