What would Simon Edvinsson cost the San Jose Sharks?<\/p>\n

The Swedish defenseman, per Elliotte Friedman, would prefer to be traded<\/a> from the Detroit Red Wings.<\/p>\n

The 6-foot-6 left-hander sounds like a perfect fit for where the San Jose Sharks are in their competitive cycle. The Sharks, for the first time since 2018-19, are serious about making the playoffs, and a 23-year-old rearguard who\u2019s already very good and getting better can help you now and in the future.<\/p>\n

The No. 6 pick of the 2021 Draft, Edvinsson has developed into a relied-upon blueliner in Motown. Last year, he averaged a career-high 22:21, second to Moritz Seider on the Wings. He was a steady penalty killer, while also adding nine goals and 25 points.<\/p>\n

RFA Edvinsson and Detroit, however, are currently in an impasse over his contract. Edvinsson is currently skating in his native Sweden.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what two NHL scouts think that Edvinsson would cost the San Jose Sharks in a trade. <\/p>\n

The Sharks could also offer sheet Edvinsson, but at the moment, per Puckpedia<\/a>, they don\u2019t have the draft picks to pull it off between the $1,575,970-$11,939,166 AAV tiers. So a San Jose offer sheet isn\u2019t likely.<\/p>\n

A San Jose Sharks trade offer for Edvinsson could start with top young defenseman Sam Dickinson, the No. 11 pick of the 2024 Draft.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould think so,\u201d Scout #1 said. \u201cAnd lots more.\u201d<\/p>\n

This scout loves Edvinsson: \u201cHe\u2019s a guy that 31 other teams would like to have. Top-pairing potential, if he\u2019s not already there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe he will be top-pairing,\u201d Scout #2 said. \u201cHe\u2019s a very good young D. It would take a big package to get him. Definitely would help San Jose, big, skates well, defends, and can move the puck.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bo Byram trade in June could be a fair comp: Defenseman Byram, 25, and a pending RFA too, was dealt from the Buffalo Sabres, along with veteran winger Jordan Greenway, to the Chicago Blackhawks for the 2026 No. 4 and No. 45 picks, and defenseman Louis Crevier.<\/p>\n

The Blackhawks immediately signed Byram to a six-year, $75 million contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cEdvinsson is more of a shutdown guy. Two-way, more defensive,\u201d Scout #1 said. \u201cByram gives you more numbers. [Edvinsson] is worth a haul, as much or more than Byram.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt depends on what you want to build on the back-end,\u201d Scout #2 said, \u201cbut I like Edvinsson.\u201d<\/p>\n

The San Jose Sharks, it appears, were interested in Byram and could\u2019ve topped the Blackhawks\u2019 No. 4 pick offer with the No. 2, but they declined to, using the selection on Ivar Stenberg instead.<\/p>\n

So, it\u2019s hard to say how much they\u2019d be willing to part with for Edvinsson.<\/p>\n

A similar value package to start, pure speculation, might be Dickinson and 2026 No. 21 pick Ryan Lin for Edvinsson. The San Jose Sharks could also dangle their 2027 first-round pick, instead of Lin.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think something like that if Detroit is interested in a future-type deal [could work],\u201d Scout #2 said. \u201cWho knows what\u2019s going on there?\u201d<\/p>\n

The Red Wings have been mired in front office chaos since Steve Yzerman was kicked upstairs.<\/p>\n

The Red Wings, anyway, don\u2019t seem motivated to move Edvinsson and might want more NHL-ready help for him. The Sharks, on the other hand, might be more inclined to deal futures than too much off their current roster.<\/p>\n

Scout #2 noted that he wouldn\u2019t part with Michael Misa or Igor Chernyshov in a deal for Edvinsson.<\/p>\n

Simon Edvinsson<\/a> will also be expensive, when signed. The RFA is, reportedly, looking for a long-term contract at about $10 million AAV, while the Wings want more of a bridge deal.<\/p>\n

The San Jose Sharks must also make sure that they have enough money to pay pending RFAs Will Smith, Misa, Chernyshov, and Yaroslav Askarov, among others.<\/p>\n

So the two teams may not be perfect trade partners.
