They preach violence within legal corporate limits, hire high-priced sports psychologists and plaster motivational buzzwords across facilities hoping that it can change an accountant’s disposition into one of a junkyard dog.

It’s nonsense. You can’t manufacture the kind of crazy needed to be a great football player, and you certainly can’t fake the violence necessary to be a top-flight defense.

The 49ers spent a year trying to figure out without their defense’s resident maniac. Their tone-setter. Their heel.

They were so lost without Greenlaw at weak-side linebacker that this past offseason, they signed him back — battle scars, injury history and all. And they didn’t hesitate for a moment on re-signing him.

Sunday — heck, this whole season — has proved that was an extremely wise decision.

The 49ers defense has been immense in the team’s 4-0 start, and the return of Greenlaw is the No. 1 reason why.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy (13) celebrates his 56-yard touchdown throw to San Francisco 49ers' George Kittle (85) with San Francisco 49ers' Dre Greenlaw (57) against the Denver Broncos in the fourth quarter at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. (Nhat V. (Greenlaw missed all but a glorious half of one game of 2024 after tearing his Achilles in Super Bowl LVIII.)

Greenlaw was certainly a massive reason why the 49ers won Sunday’s 24-14 rock fight with the Denver Broncos.

The 49ers’ defense allowed just 3.3 yards per carry when Greenlaw was on the field Sunday, per the NFL. Compare that to the 5.2 yards per carry when he was off the field.

Greenlaw also had a team-leading 12 tackles and generated two quarterback pressures, including one quick pressure, on nine pass rushes.

He was simply everywhere, and the Broncos started hearing footsteps.

But that’s what Greenlaw has always done. He’s an intimidator.

And he had bad blood and even worse intentions Sunday.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan talks with Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton after the 49ers 24-10 win at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. Greenlaw unloaded a string of words I wouldn’t yell at even my worst former bosses.

OK, maybe one.

It wasn’t polite. But Greenlaw isn’t paid to be polite.

He’s here to play football the old-school way: Obliterate anything foolish enough to wear the wrong color laundry.

If you thought Greenlaw wouldn’t be dialed up Sunday after spending 2025 in Denver, who wooed him away from the 49ers with promises of a bigger role, only to like their alternatives after he was injured, leading to his unceremonious release at the end of the season, you simply don’t know the man.

He treats snubs the way Gordon Ramsay treats undercooked poultry. He remembers every single slight and ensures that someone eventually pays the bill.

He might even make a few slights up. Anything to get an edge.

And as he told his 49ers teammates this week, even as he nursed an injured quad, he wasn’t missing this one.

Greenlaw was so amped that Kyle Shanahan was trying to convince him to tone it down a bit.

He was amped up to the point that asking his peers if they were stunned by his sideline eruption deserved only dripping sarcasm:

“No,” Fred Warner deadpanned to open his postgame press conference.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="San Francisco 49ers' Fred Warner (54) celebrates a fourth down play against the Denver Broncos to end the game late in the fourth quarter at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. He plays as if everyone on the team owes him money, even if the other team paid him a lot of money for a year of service.

But the point was delivered. Really, I love everything about him. He plays with that emotion. All good,” Payton said after the game.

Greenlaw, for what it’s worth, had a small skirmish at midfield after the game and then ran straight to the 49ers’ tunnel. Better to just remove yourself from a combustible situation.

When he was on the field, Greenlaw’s presence changed the game’s geometry. When he plays, Warner flies around unburdened, the pass rush gets some extra thump up front and receivers check their rear-view mirrors before crossing the hash marks.

You can diagram all the pre-snap motion you want. You can hire every Shanahan disciple there is.
