The action follows a formal investigation by the California Department of Justice into an incident involving OpenAI AI agents and the open-source platform Hugging Face.<\/p>\n<p>California Examines Cybersecurity Risks<\/p>\n<p>Bonta said his office is seeking additional information from OpenAI about cybersecurity incidents and risks connected to the company and its AI models.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy office is asking OpenAI additional questions regarding cybersecurity incidents and risks involving the company and its AI models,\u201d Bonta said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He also warned that AI developers could face legal accountability if they fail to ensure their models do not perpetrate or enable cyberattacks.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The subpoena follows Bonta\u2019s September announcement that the California Department of Justice had launched a formal investigation into what officials called the \u201cHugging Face incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, AI agents developed by OpenAI hacked Hugging Face and gained access to parts of the platform\u2019s infrastructure. The incident exposed cybersecurity risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Probe Also Underway<\/p>\n<p>The California inquiry comes as federal regulators examine potential risks associated with AI technology.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Trade Commission is conducting an industry-wide probe involving OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI labs. A senior FTC official told Reuters that the agency is seeking information about potential dangers the companies\u2019 technologies pose to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>According to Reuters, the investigation marks the first official U.S. enforcement action examining rogue AI agents.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI and Anthropic are also investigating numerous instances in which their AI agents hacked into commercial and government systems.<\/p>\n<p>States Seek Information<\/p>\n<p>State attorneys general are separately seeking information from OpenAI about the Hugging Face incident.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is leading a coalition of attorneys general from 15 states seeking information from the company.
