{"id":486020,"date":"2026-10-05T19:06:07","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T19:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/486020\/"},"modified":"2026-10-05T19:06:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T19:06:07","slug":"ballots-sent-out-to-voters-amid-big-races-for-san-diego-city-council-and-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/486020\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballots sent out to voters amid big races for San Diego City Council and taxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Voters will soon be receiving their ballots in the mail for the midterm election, which features hotly contested races for California governor, Congress, the San Diego City Council, taxes and more.<\/p>\n<p>Ballots were mailed out over the weekend, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.<\/p>\n<p>Voters can cast their ballot in the following ways:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Ballots can be mailed back, but must be postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 3.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Ballots can be deposited in any of the 150 ballot drop boxes located around the county.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014For those looking to vote in-person, they can go to the Registrar of Voters\u2019 office at the San Diego County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa, located at 5600 Overland Ave. Polls there will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Beginning Oct. 24, vote centers will also open for in-person voting. Only select voting centers will be open starting that day, and all of them will open on Oct. 31. Voters can drop off their ballots at voting centers, too.<\/p>\n<p>More information can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdvote.com\/content\/rov\/en.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sdvote.com<\/a> or by calling 858-565-5800.<\/p>\n<p>This election cycle, voters will weigh in on major contests for elected office and other issues.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an open race for California governor between Democrat Xavier Becerra, a former Biden administration official and former California attorney general, and Republican Steve Hilton, a British-American Fox News personality.<\/p>\n<p>In North County, newly drawn Congressional maps have set up a race crucial to determining which party controls the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>In the 48th Congressional District, Democratic San Diego City Council member Marni von Wilpert faces Republican Jim Desmond, a San Diego County supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>The district was redrawn last year to make it more competitive for Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>On the San Diego City Council, there are four seats up for grabs this cycle.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most high-profile races is between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2026\/10\/02\/bailey-crosby-clash-on-taxes-trash-homelessness-rent-control\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democrat Nicole Crosby and Republican-turned-independent Richard Bailey,<\/a> the former mayor of Coronado. The seat, District 2, represents areas like Point Loma, Ocean Beach and Clairemont.<\/p>\n<p>Another competitive race is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2026\/09\/25\/in-district-4-council-forum-henry-foster-and-challenger-martha-abraham-clash-on-surveillance-housing-and-city-hall\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in southeastern San Diego<\/a>, where incumbent Henry Foster faces a challenge from Martha Abraham.<\/p>\n<p>Ballot measures to raise taxes are another leading issue in this year\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>Statewide, voters will mull the creation of a \u201cbillionaire tax,\u201d a one-time tax on California billionaires to fund health care, education and food assistance programs.<\/p>\n<p>In San Diego County, a measure is on the ballot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2026\/09\/15\/fight-to-pass-measure-b-the-countywide-sales-tax-increase-heats-up\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to raise the countywide sales tax rate<\/a> by a half-cent.
