California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass responded to President Donald Trump’s apparent comments about foreign powers taking out Los Angeles and San Diego at a Republican rally in Nebraska Monday evening.

“They could take out a city. Let ’em take out Los Angeles. Let ’em take out San Diego,” Trump said in reference to the Iran war, drawing cheers from the crowd. “This is a very small price to pay and it’s going to be over very soon. It’s essentially almost over with.”

Newsom’s press office responded on social media roughly two hours later.

“Let’s be clear: The President is advocating for an attack on 10+ million U.S. residents in two of America’s largest cities,” Newsom’s office said. “This is not normal. None of this is. And we will continue to remind folks of that every day.”

Bass also issued a statement Monday night in response to the president’s comments.

“The President of the United States suggested that a foreign government attack Los Angeles,” Bass said. “His statements against our city are dangerous and could potentially compromise our safety. The role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives. In the face of irresponsible threats, as Angelenos, we know how to stand together and protect our city.”

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria called Trump’s words “reckless.”

“San Diego is not collateral damage,” Gloria said. “We are not expendable. And we are never a ‘small price to pay.’ Keep our city out of your reckless war talk.”

Trump was in attendance at the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center in Grand Island, Neb. to campaign for Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) ahead of the midterm elections. Ricketts faces an unexpectedly tight race against independent Dan Osborn, according to the polls.
