(TNND)  \u2014 President Donald Trump suggested Monday night that an Iranian attack on Los Angeles or San Diego would be a \u201csmall price to pay\u201d for the United States to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenationaldesk.com\/top-videos\/president-trump-issues-ultimatum-to-iran-sign-a-peace-deal-or-cease-to-exist-united-states#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">prevail in the war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a rally in Nebraska, Trump was defending <a href=\"https:\/\/thenationaldesk.com\/news\/americas-news-now\/trump-says-high-gas-prices-are-due-to-closed-us-refineries-blown-up-russia-refineries-strait-of-hormuz-california-ukraine-oil-diesel#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">higher gas prices <\/a>he said were tied to the conflict. \u201cIt\u2019s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe,\u201d he said. \u201cThey can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president did not explain whether he was describing a specific threat, speaking hypothetically or making a political jab at the two California cities.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear weapons did not come up in the remarks, though Trump has repeatedly defended the U.S. military campaign against Iran as necessary to prevent Tehran from developing one. He also predicted the war would end \u201cvery soon,\u201d while mocking Iran\u2019s claim that it has a \u201cbig threshold for pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>California Gov. Gavin Newsom quickly fired back on social media, again criticizing Trump over the deployment of National Guard troops and Marines to the state during his immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should \u2018take out\u2019 Los Angeles and San Diego,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/2107288831112466787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote on X<\/a>. \u201cHe is deranged and dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles Mayor Karen <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MayorOfLA\/status\/2107315868493557945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bass said<\/a>, \u201cThe role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MayorToddGloria\/status\/2107295637058494706\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">called out Trump on X<\/a>, writing: \u201cSan Diego is not collateral damage.
