Measure E, which Alameda voters approved in 2024 and went into effect on July 1, 2025, was designed to combine, replace and renew the existing Measures B1 and A without increasing taxes.

Like its predecessors, Measure E provides about $24 million to support AUSD programs and salaries; helps to ensure a stable funding source for Alameda public schools; and helps the AUSD continue attracting and retaining quality educators as the cost of housing and living continues to rise in our community.

Each year, the committee’s work culminates in an annual staff report and shorter committee report, both of which will be presented to the AUSD Board of Education. Applications are available on our Parcel Tax Oversight Committee webpage (bayareane.ws/4zhf7Jh) or in-person at the AUSD offices in the Niel Tam Education Center at 2060 Challenger Drive in Alameda.

Completed applications must be received in the district offices no later than 5 p.m. Oct. 15, and the Board of Education will vote on the recommended applicants at its Oct. 27 public meeting.

New bike path: In other news, AUSD officials and staff were delighted to be able to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony last week for the Central Avenue Bikeway. This bikeway is making it easier, faster and more fun for our students at Paden Elementary, Maya Lin and Encinal Junior & Senior High schools to bicycle to and from their campuses.

We are super-grateful to the city of Alameda for creating bikeways across our island and for doing so much work to improve safety, specifically around our school sites. Want to help keep kids safe on our island? This year, we have even more students cycling to school, in part due to the new bikeways and in part due to the temporary relocation of Otis Elementary School to the former Lum Elementary site.

We ask that drivers keep a sharp eye out for cyclists during morning drop-off times (roughly 8 to 8:45 a.m. weekdays) and afternoon release times (about 2:50 to 3:40 p.m.). Please consider these periods a time to practice your very safest driving by obeying the speed limit, being patient and constantly scanning for students on foot or bikes. It takes a village, as they say, to raise a child; it also takes a village to keep all of our children safe.

Reach Susan Davis, the Alameda Unified School District’s senior manager for community affairs, at 510-337-7175 or SDavis@alamedaunified.org.

The Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) is now accepting applications for three seats on its Parcel Tax Oversight…

[34
13822,4730,143,145,144
post-486946","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-oakland","tag-alameda-unified-school-district","tag-k-12-education","tag-oakland","tag-oakland-headlines","tag-oakland-news
["GET
