Officials in California denounced comments made by President Donald Trump as \u201cdangerous\u201d on Monday after he appeared to suggest Iran could \u201ctake out\u201d Los Angeles or San Diego \u2013 major cities in a state he has often criticized.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, ahead of the midterm elections, Trump once again called the consequences of the war with Iran a \u201csmall price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe,\u201d adding that Iran could potentially take out an American city.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet, let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego,\u201d Trump said in comments that drew swift backlash from California\u2019s leaders.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very small price to pay and it\u2019s gonna be over with very soon,\u201d he said of the war.<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly made the argument that high gas prices<\/a> are a small price to pay for the war in Iran and in his Nebraska comments, he appeared to contrast that with a dramatically higher price to pay \u2013 an attack on a U.S. city. <\/p>\n

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said on X<\/a> that Trump was \u201cclearly stating U.S. cities would have been threatened if a nuclear Iran hadn\u2019t been stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is safer because of the President. Iran has no nuclear, no navy, no air force, and no money,\u201d Cheung said.<\/p>\n

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom called<\/a> the president \u201cderanged and dangerous,\u201d while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said<\/a> the statements about the city \u201ccould potentially compromise our safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives,\u201d said Bass, also a Democrat.<\/p>\n

The Democratic mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria, said<\/a> the city \u201cis not collateral damage. We are not expendable. And we are never a \u2018small price to pay.\u2019 Keep our city out of your reckless war talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s comments also drew criticism from Republican congressional candidate Jim Desmond, who said he \u201cvehemently\u201d disagreed with the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica must stand up to Iran and defend our interests, but the first responsibility of our Commander in Chief is to protect the American people and our homeland,\u201d said<\/a> Desmond, who is running in California\u2019s 48th Congressional district. He added, \u201cNo American city is expendable, and no American family should ever be treated as collateral damage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s highlighting of cities in California that could be targeted by Iran comes as he has frequently criticized the state and its leaders over immigration, state elections and wildfires.<\/p>\n

The president also repeated during his speech in Nebraska that the war is \u201cgoing to end very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the onset of the war, Trump had vowed that the conflict would only last a few weeks, but it has since gone on seven months.<\/p>\n
