Less than a day after seeking the public’s help identifying a suspect accused of intentionally running over a puppy, police in California announced the arrest of an elderly woman for the crime.

The Santa Ana Police Department on Wednesday, Sept. 30, shared surveillance video of the Sept. 8 incident in which a minivan allegedly intentionally ran over a 9-month-old male pit bull mix in the area of 900 West Park Lane, killing it.

A neighbor reported seeing a minivan parked at the location, and told police they believed the woman driver intentionally ran over the puppy. Investigators spent weeks canvassing the area for surveillance video, eventually finding one that corroborated the witness’s report.

The video shows an older blue or green Honda Odyssey with a roof rack parked in front of 926 West Park Lane at around 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 8. The driver removed the puppy from the van and placed it under the vehicle. She put dog food near the driver’s door, then slowly drove forward as the puppy approached the food.

After the puppy was run over by the rear driver-side tire, the vehicle stopped on top of the dog for approximately 15 seconds before driving away northbound on Lowell Street.

The video did not capture the van’s license plate, however, prompting police to seek tips from the public. Less than a day later, on Thursday, Oct. 1, police said detectives using Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology identified the suspect vehicle and an “associated address” in Anaheim.

Hahn Nguyen, 75, allegedly admitted owning and abandoning the pit bull puppy, named “Blackey.” The suspect vehicle was located inside her garage.

She was booked into the Santa Ana Jail on charges of animal cruelty and animal abandonment.
