Tips on how to safely evacuate animals during an emergency will be available at a free workshop this weekend.

The Animal Evacuation & Emergency Preparedness Clinic is set for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Ramona Community Center, 434 Aqua Lane. No registration is required.

Large and/or small animal owners can learn how to prepare to evacuate if there is a wildfire or other emergency, organizers said.

The evacuation clinic will be conducted by Lt. Tiffanie Pucillo with the San Diego County Department of Animal Services.

Discussion will focus on having a plan for your animals and/or horses, sheltering in place, temporary evacuation points, evacuation strategies, ensuring trailers are connected correctly and working with animals/horses that may not load well. Pucillo will also share information about ways to help others evacuate including personal liability.

Cal Fire Capt. Michael Cornette will be attending to talk about disaster preparedness, evacuation levels and the decision-making process used to determine when evacuations are ordered.

Cheryl Wegner, president of Ramona Trails Association, will provide a trailer loading demonstration.

Wegner said she plans to bring her truck, horse trailer and horse named Sierra to give the demonstration at the end of the discussions. She said attendees will see that she is prepared with a first aid kit, medicine bag and a horse emergency kit.

“It’s nice to have a visual of what an evacuation looks like and the tips might be helpful,” said Wegner, who evacuated during the 2007 Witch Creek fire. “Attendees will have the ability to ask questions right there on the fly.”

Tips on how to safely evacuate animals during an emergency will be available at a free workshop this…

[28
190331,190332,190333,74,76,75
post-487218","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-animal-evacuation-and-emergency-preparedness","tag-animal-evacuations","tag-ramona-community-center","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news
["GET
