"MelanieSACRAMENTO, Calif. —

A Sacramento letter carrier started his shift delivering mail one day in September, and ended up helping to save a life.

On Tuesday, the Sacramento Perkins U. S. Postal Service branch office honored Francisco Tran with a ceremony.

Tran’s managers and coworkers recognized him for jumping into action on his route last month.

That’s when he heard a loud screech and then a crash. He looked around and then saw one of the customers he delivers mail to lying on the ground, not moving or talking. She had crashed her bicycle and needed help.

Tran called 911 and stayed with the woman until paramedics arrived.

Tran’s coworkers gathered at Tuesday’s ceremony as postal officials praised his actions, saying the recognition is well deserved.

“He is a hero,” said Sacramento Postmaster Neil Gonzalez. “Every man and woman that works with the Postal Service is a hero. We deliver medicine every day. We take care of our people, so he definitely is a hero.”

Tran felt humbled by all the attention he received during the ceremony at his post office.

“I was just there at the right time. I’m pretty sure any carrier would have done the same thing,” Tran said.

He says he’s seen the customer he helped several times since the incident. He said she is now doing well.

“Every now and then she’s like, ‘You saved my life,’” Tran explained. “I’m just like, ‘I just did what anyone else would do.’”
