(FOX26) — A fast-moving backyard fire in southeast Fresno prompted a rescue Tuesday afternoon after firefighters learned residents were still inside a home on East Mackenzie Avenue.

The Fresno Fire Department received multiple calls about the fire at about 1:30 p.m.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire and thick black smoke coming from the back of the residence. The fire was rapidly moving through a pile of debris toward the home.

Firefighters learned there were still residents inside, including one non-ambulatory person, and shifted to a rescue strategy.

They got everyone out safely.

Firefighters rescue residents from burning house in Fresno (Photo: Provided to FOX26)

[RELATED] Large fireball outside warehouse in southeast Fresno

During the operation, one firefighter was bitten by a large dog and was treated at the scene. The injury was described as very minor, and the firefighter’s protective gear helped prevent more serious injuries.

Crews contained the fire to an outbuilding and debris in the backyard, preventing it from extending into the home. No one had been displaced, though the incident remained active and utility shutoffs could be needed.

Firefighters also encountered downed power lines that made it difficult to access the backyard. Crews fought the fire from neighboring yards and through the home. Because of the power lines, firefighters were unable to use a ladder truck, but they used a deck gun from the top of an engine to spray water over the home onto the burning outbuilding. The downed power line was later secured.

The non-ambulatory resident was evaluated by EMS, though it was not immediately clear whether the person would need to be taken to the hospital.

The incident was a two-alarm fire, with additional resources called in when crews went into rescue mode. With high temperatures, firefighters were also monitored to ensure they stayed hydrated and avoided heat-related injuries.

FRESNO, Calif.
