My Morning Jacket kicked off a seven-night stand at The Fillmore in San Francisco\u2014one of the band\u2019s only non-festival plays in 2026\u2014with a series of tributes to Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead, including a debut performance of \u201cSugaree\u201d featuring special guest Molly Tuttle.<\/p>\n

After performing at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in one of the Dead\u2019s old haunts, Golden Gate Park, on Friday, MMJ surprised fans the following night by opening its residency at The Fillmore, another significant venue in Grateful Dead history, by inviting Molly Tuttle out to sing \u201cSugaree.\u201d Tuttle later returned to the stage to sit in on Sly & the Family Stone\u2019s \u201cEveryday People\u201d\u2014a cover MMJ played once in 2017 and revived during its hometown run at Louisville Palace Theatre<\/a> in 2025\u2014and again during the encore, joining MMJ to pay tribute to Dolly Parton with \u201cEagle When She Flies,\u201d the second debut of the run.<\/p>\n

The Grateful Dead nods continued on Sunday. After debuting George Harrison\u2019s \u201cBehind That Locked Door\u201d with help from special guest Tyler Ballgame, My Morning Jacket dusted off the Dead\u2019s \u201cBrown-Eyed Woman\u201d for the first time in over a decade (last time played 1\/26\/14, per setlist.fm<\/a>) with Ballgame on lead vocals. The band later closed the main set with the Grateful Dead\u2019s version of Kris Kristofferson\u2019s \u201cMe and Bobby McGee\u201d\u2014a song popularized by Janis Joplin and covered by the Dead as a tribute after her death.<\/p>\n

If any doubts remained about MMJ\u2019s intent to honor Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead\u2019s place in San Francisco music history, they subsided as frontman Jim James addressed the crowd: <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been listening to the Dead do their version of \u2018Bobby McGee\u2019 for like months. I\u2019ve just been obsessing over that song, and we\u2019ve been so excited to play that song here at The Fillmore, and to pay tribute to Bobby Weir, who just brought so much love and joy to our lives\u2026 We were so lucky to get to play with him a few times, and I just loved hearing him sing that song and knowing that they were singing it for Janis too, and having it be a two-part tribute\u2026 One for Bobby, one for Janis, wherever they are. Thank you so much for all the joy you brought us.\u201d<\/p>\n
