Under pressure of an unreleased court date, Titans and coworkers at the Diversity Initiative Resource Center hosted a fundraising event this Sunday.

Removal proceedings are formal court hearings initiated by the U.S. government to decide if an immigrant should be removed from the country. Barajas received a court date of Oct. 1, which was canceled without notice and not rescheduled, forcing him to shoulder $30,000 in legal fees.

An ongoing GoFundMe has been created in addition to the fundraiser, which occurred from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 4, with all proceeds going directly to support Barajas. The event was hosted only 10 minutes away from campus.

Orange County has a lengthy history of deportation cases, housing a sanctuary city — Santa Ana — with a relatively slow-moving court. As of July 2026, California ranked third in the nation for the highest number of migrants detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at 6,412.

30-year-old Barajas has lived in the U.S. for 22 years, having immigrated at the age of 8. In 2022, Barajas submitted a petition to the immigration court, which he was then notified that it was canceled.

“That was another administration back then. So now with this administration, they are going through everyone’s paperwork, as such as anyone who had any type of paperwork that’s been canceled,” Barajas said. “It’s been processed from petitions to asylums through literally anything, and they’re like picking at it. So I spoke to different lawyers, and they told me ‘your paperwork is one of the — you know, the bottom of the barrel and they found it.’”

Barajas, among other volunteers hosting the event, voiced concern over lack of direct action from campus administration.

“I don’t see much when it comes to the president, you know. I don’t see much from (President Ronald) Rochon or things like that, speaking about these actual issues that are happening,” Barajas said. “I feel like there is no support.”

In April of 2025, the president’s office released a statement to campus via email amid student visas being unexpectedly revoked at a rapid pace.

“I want to reaffirm Cal State Fullerton’s commitment to supporting our immigrant and international Titans: you matter… Please be assured that Cal State Fullerton does not share information related to a student’s immigration status or other confidential records unless legally required to do so,” it reads.

After contacting the on-campus resource centers, Barajas and fellow Titans turned to the community. Volunteers made and sold an array of authentic foods and clothing while running pay-to-enter games. Friends of Barajas and campus peers organized the event in just five days.

“Seeing so many students come in and participate in the event and also be volunteers just shows me that there’s a really big community on campus who cares about this issue because, like we’ve mentioned, Jesus is not the only one going through these troubles,” said Alexa Herrera, a fifth-year civil engineering center and community engagement student assistant for the Latinx resource center. “With the current administration, this is a reality for both students as well as people in our community, but not everybody has access to people who can help fundraise and people who can help support them.”

The CSU hosts the largest undocumented student population of any university system in the country, at an estimated 10,000. As the county faces ongoing, growing action in immigration court, volunteers at the event echoed a shared advocacy for the myriad community members affected, calling for any level of action.

“Making events like this help bridge the gap between people who may not know that their activism can be as simple as coming to an event, enjoying an activity that they already like to do with their friends, and then that money going directly towards mutual aid,” said Nina Ho, who organized the activities and communications for this event.

CSUF students can seek support through Counseling and Psychological Services and Titans Dreams Resource Center on campus.
