The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday instructed\u00a0staff to begin the process of establishing a dedicated fund for the purpose of\u00a0maintaining the Sixth\u00a0Street Viaduct Bridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a unanimous vote, council members approved a motion introduced by\u00a0Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado, who represents downtown neighborhoods where the\u00a0bridge is located. Jurado described the maintenance trust fund as an innovative\u00a0funding mechanism allowing the city to accept, retain and expend donations from\u00a0private entities.<\/p>\n

Funds from this account would be used for sanitation services,\u00a0graffiti abatement and beautification for the bridge.<\/p>\n

“The Sixth\u00a0Street Bridge is an iconic gateway inseparable from the\u00a0character of our Downtown and Eastside neighborhoods, yet it still lacks the\u00a0investment necessary to remain as the vibrant, welcoming fixture it was\u00a0designed to be,” Jurado said in her remarks during Tuesday’s City Council\u00a0meeting.<\/p>\n

“This trust fund would create a dedicated place to receive\u00a0contributions and put them toward stewarding the viaduct’s ongoing cleanliness\u00a0and long-term prosperity,” she added.<\/p>\n

Jurado has also partnered with the Los Angeles Conservation Corps\u00a0(LACC) to provide additional beautification services dedicated to the SixthsStreet Bridge and Council District 14.<\/p>\n

LACC would continue to supplement services provided by LA Sanitation\u00a0through graffiti removal, brush and weed abatement, bulky item pickup, and\u00a0trash pickup on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n

The $588 million Sixth\u00a0Street Viaduct Bridge has been impacted by\u00a0copper wire theft, among other issues, since it came online in 2022. It\u00a0replaced the original 1932 structure that was demolished in 2016 due to\u00a0structural issues.<\/p>\n

Underneath the bridge, city officials recently announced they would be\u00a0delaying the opening of the new $60 million, 12-acre Sixth\u00a0Street PARC, or\u00a0Park, Arts, River and Connectivity project, until next year. The Bureau of\u00a0Engineering has stated the issue stems from the installation of playground\u00a0equipment. It was originally slated for opening in the fall.<\/p>\n

Residents and business owners have raised concerns about how the city\u00a0will keep the peace and maintain the park. Some residents worry the park may be\u00a0overrun by homeless individuals or encampments or turn into a site for crime.<\/p>\n
