The ongoing heat wave<\/a> across the Golden State bears little resemblance to weather that reminds people of pumpkin spice and fall leaves, at least for now.<\/p>\n

And while a blast of cooler air is set to arrive this weekend along with a swift fall breeze, high temperatures will remain near record levels through Thursday across the state, and that’s not even to mention the records that have been broken.<\/p>\n

From the Oregon border to the Mexico border, records have tied or fallen all over the place, and it has been particularly impressive across parts of Southern California. Here’s a rundown.<\/p>\n

\"Southern<\/p>\n

Southern California tied and broken records between Friday and Monday.<\/p>\n

This heat wave has easily been at its worst in Southern California, where a high temperature of an astounding 105 degrees was measured in San Diego near the water Saturday.<\/p>\n

As offshore winds push the air over from the dry inland desert and mountains, there has been no moderating force to cool things down quickly. The result has been many days of temps above 100 degrees during a time of year when things normally start to cool down a touch.<\/p>\n

\"Central<\/p>\n

Central California tied and broken records between Friday and Monday<\/p>\n

Temperatures are not much better across the San Joaquin Valley and foothills, with highs in the upper 90s and low 100s coming close to smashing records. Paso Robles recorded 105 degrees and Lemon Cove on Monday broke the record set just last year, with Modesto also hitting 99 and breaking its previous record by 1 degree.<\/p>\n

Northern California tied and broken records between Friday and Monday<\/p>\n

Into Northern California, Redding tied its old record of 101 degrees Monday, while Strawberry Valley beat its previous record on Sunday by 3 degrees.<\/p>\n

This heat wave is strong, but falls short of 2024 in Northern and Central California<\/p>\n

High temperatures in the upper 90s might seem extreme for northern and central California, but travel back just two years, and these temps were even hotter during this stretch.<\/p>\n

In 2024, the average high temperature for both Fresno and Sacramento was above 100 degrees. This is in stark contrast to 2025 and years prior, when highs were more par for the course in the 70s and 80s.<\/p>\n

Still, the temperatures this year are the 2nd hottest since 1990 for most of the Central Valley, and is the hottest for the Southern California metroplex.<\/p>\n

Cool down finally on the way<\/p>\n

Rejoice, this hot weather will come to an end.<\/p>\n

Two distinct areas of lower pressure called troughs, one from Alaska and one off the Pacific Ocean, will slide into California this weekend and combine with what is left of Hurricane Rachel for a sudden burst of a fall breeze.<\/p>\n

\"Lower<\/p>\n

Lower than normal pressure across the upper atmosphere (in blue) will slide in this weekend with a cool breeze and dramatically cooler temperatures, especially by Sunday.<\/p>\n

This will push temperatures way down between Friday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

On Friday, high temperatures across northern California will start to dip into the 90s and 80s as the evening breeze roars in with gusts above 20 mph and higher at elevation, and sit comfortably in the 70s at most by Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n
