But the nonprofit that runs the park has also long emphasized the telling of the history of the Ohlone people who occupied the land long before the Peraltas. Now, a new permanent installation will further preserve and interpret Ohlone history. For the past three years, Ohlone artists, culture bearers, historians and designers have been shaping the installation, which features a new sculpture by the landscape artist Walter Hood, a MacArthur fellow; a 100-foot-long bench painted with images of the traditional textiles Fruitvale families brought from their own cultures, and basketweaver Linda Yamane’s Ohlone Basketry Garden. The Oct. 10 grand opening will feature a screening of the short “Who Did the Work?,” a doc by Rick Tejada Flores that explores forced labor during the colonial period.
Saturday, Oct. 10, 12 to 3 p.m., free, Peralta Hacienda, 2465 34th Ave.

The new permanent exhibit at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park centers Ohlone history, presence, and resurgence.
