FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Community members in the small West Park community southwest of Fresno say several people were taken into custody by immigration officers Monday, including five people whose detention was captured on cellphone video.

West Park is an unincorporated community made up of just a handful of roads near Prospect, Jensen, Valentine and Marks avenues.

Community members who spoke with FOX26 said multiple encounters with immigration officers happened within hours of each other Monday.

Selina Castillo, who grew up in West Park, said she first learned that a man had been detained at Saber’s Market near Prospect and Jensen avenues around 7:30 a.m.

Hours later, Castillo said her mother called to tell her immigration officers were outside her home.

“And then about 1:30 in the afternoon, I got a call from my mom saying that they were right outside her front gate,” Castillo said.

Castillo rushed to the area and began recording on her cellphone.

“Yes, it was four gentlemen and a young lady that were detained,” Castillo said. “They pulled up on them right as they got home from work.”

Cellphone video shared with FOX26 shows officers and vehicles on Prospect Avenue as several people are taken into custody.

Castillo said witnessing the encounter in the neighborhood where she grew up was difficult.

“I never really thought that it would hit this close to home,” Castillo said. “And the fact that it happened right in front of my mom’s house where I grew up, it hit way too close to home yesterday.”

FOX26 has not independently confirmed the circumstances surrounding each detention or why the individuals were taken into custody.

West Park school district alerts families

The reported immigration activity also prompted a response from the West Park School District.

In a ParentSquare notice sent to families, the district said it had been informed of ICE detentions in the community.

In a ParentSquare notice sent to families, the district said it had been informed of ICE detentions in the community.

The district told families it would not share information about immigration status with immigration authorities and asked parents or legal guardians to be at bus stops to receive their children.

West Park resident Rose Arriano said word about the immigration activity spread quickly.

“They sent out a notice to the families to notify them that ICE was in the area, that they would not share immigration status and that parents should be at the bus to pick up their kids,” Arriano said.

Residents said neighbors also began driving through the community, checking on families and sharing information about what they were seeing.

“We are a very tight-knit community,” Castillo said. “Everybody is family. Everybody looks out for one another. Everybody has each other’s back. We are all here for each other.”

Castillo said residents offered to help parents who were afraid to leave their homes.

“If you need to get inside, get inside,” Castillo recalled neighbors telling one another. “If you need help getting your kids from school, let us know.”
