The City Council has postponed a vote on the proposed changes until Oct. 27.

Currently, residents pay more for increased water usage under a tiered system. However, a legal challenge argues that this method is unfair, as the city’s costs don’t increase proportionally with water consumption. The proposed new system advocates for a flat rate, which could mean that those who use less water end up paying more.

This story continues below.

At a recent City Council meeting, public utilities officials emphasized their commitment to affordability while navigating these changes.

“Public utilities remains committed to our customers and prioritizing affordability — taking every step to ease the burden,” an official stated.

Under the existing tiered rates, the cost for the first 7,000 gallons is $8.51, increasing to $11.89 for those exceeding 16,000 gallons. Approved hikes for 2027 will adjust the lowest rate to $9.75 under tier one. The proposed flat rate could standardize the cost to $11.09 per unit for all residents, regardless of usage, while the monthly meter fee would also rise to $40.97 by 2027.

Critics of the flat rate proposal argue that it undermines water conservation efforts. One resident expressed frustration, stating, “Personally, my water bill has doubled in the last 20 years, and I’ve been in the same house,” adding that it seems unfair for conservationists to bear the brunt of costs while others waste water.

Despite the proposed flat rate, there’s potential for a return to a tiered structure, especially with the introduction of Assembly Bill 2180. The city plans a new water rate study to ensure residents receive the best possible pricing.

A legal challenge argues that the current tiered system method is unfair, as the city’s costs don’t increase…

[28
74,76,75
post-487718","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news
["GET
