LOS ANGELES — A Delta Air Lines plane and an Air Canada plane collided on the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday morning, according to officials.<\/p>\n
According to Air Canada, one of its aircraft had just arrived from Toronto when it was clipped by a departing Delta Air Lines plane. The Delta flight was bound for Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.<\/p>\n
A piece of the Delta plane’s wing appeared to be lodged inside the stabilizer of the Air Canada aircraft. The curved portion of the wing, known as a winglet, was ripped off during the collision and remained stuck in the stabilizer.<\/p>\n
One passenger on the Delta plane told Eyewitness News they were aboard as the aircraft was pulling away from the gate and taxiing to the runway when it appeared the Air Canada plane began moving into its path.<\/p>\n
“While taxiing at Los Angeles International Airport, a Delta aircraft made contact with an Air Canada aircraft,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologize to our customers for the experience and delay in their travels.”<\/p>\n
Both aircraft have been taken out of service following the collision.<\/p>\n
Operations at LAX were continuing as normal, an airport spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The Delta plane was carrying 275 passengers and 15 crew members, according to a Delta spokesperson. It was not immediately clear whether there were any passengers on the Air Canada plane at the time of the collision.<\/p>\n
There were no reports of any injuries.<\/p>\n
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified.<\/p>\n
