San Francisco has not had a real brawl over its lone House seat since Nancy Pelosi grabbed it in 1987. Thirty-nine years of coronations end on November 3.<\/p>\n
The slugfest to replace Pelosi is not Democrat-versus-Republican. It is Democrat-versus-Democrat: State Sen. REUTERS<\/p>\n Last June\u2019s primary sorted the field with the subtlety of a club bouncer. Wiener swaggered in at 41%. Chan, buoyed by a late Pelosi nod, grabbed 30. Saikat Chakrabarti,\u00a0a self-funding centimillionaire who helped elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018, face-planted at 18%. He then converted his campaign into a PAC and shipped 200 canvassers to Chan\u2019s side.<\/p>\n Both candidates treat affordability as the city\u2019s five-alarm fire. They have different approaches to the crisis.<\/p>\n Wiener spent a decade in Sacramento gutting local control over zoning in an effort to expand housing supply. Chan has stood with residents against high-rise towers, and prefers to champion subsidized housing and tenants\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n He brands her an obstructionist. She brands him a creature of developers and billionaires. <\/p>\n Naturally, Pelosi could not resist playing kingmaker. After she backed Chan, Sen. Adam Schiff and a thicket of local politicians and unions fell in line.<\/p>\n Chan still trails Wiener in cash. She does not trail him in institutions.<\/p>\n Wiener opened an exploratory committee in 2023 while Pelosi still held the seat, then announced in October 2025 thta he would run whether she stayed in it or not \u2014 smack in the middle of the Prop. 50 redistricting fight she wanted to own.<\/p>\n Wiener allegedly broke a promise<\/a> to longtime San Francisco kingpin Willie Brown not to challenge Pelosi. \u201cI\u2019ll never forget that,\u201d Brown growled. (Wiener calls the story \u201ccompletely made up.\u201d) <\/p>\n In 2024, Pelosi publicly torched Wiener\u2019s<\/a> proposed AI safety bill. Wiener took it down, and apologized. He then jabbed Pelosi and Ro Khanna, another Chan supporter, as Congress\u2019s two biggest stock traders.<\/p>\n Style tracks biography. Wiener is the better unscripted performer \u2014 6-foot-7, TV-fluent, pushing for fifteen debates, armed with a statewide brand. He is also a protest magnet.<\/p>\n A Trans March confrontation over Gaza went viral in June, with demonstrators chasing Wiener out of Dolores Park, yelling about his \u201cIsraeli handlers.\u201d<\/p>\n Chan is lower voltage on a stage, but thrives in rooms Wiener cannot fill: Cantonese banquets, Richmond and Sunset district doorsteps, union halls. She lacks his name ID. She has Pelosi\u2019s turnout machine. <\/p>\n Wiener posts more. Chan organizes on the ground.<\/p>\n Wiener has been a champion for gay rights. The Harvey Milk LGBTQ Club endorsed Chan anyway. In 2026 San Francisco, being an openly gay Democrat is table stakes. <\/p>\n Who would be the better House member? The seat is for passing laws, raising caucus money, extracting appropriations and wielding a famous district as a bullhorn.<\/p>\n Wiener has already passed an industrial-sized quantity of legislation in his career. He would be the more effective legislator.<\/p>\n The real question mark is how far Pelosi\u2019s influence will go. Wiener has allies<\/a> in the California Democratic Party establishment, including Attorney General Rob Bonta. But Pelosi has old ties, and favors to call in.<\/p>\n Mail-in ballots are landing. There have been two debates, neither of which has been a game-changer.\u00a0The only new development is that both candidates are hammering AI. Chan is also attacking Israel.
